Pliska, the first Bulgarian capital 681-893. The thickness of the walls is up to 2.60 m, up to 12 m high. The basilica to the capital is the largest for its time in medieval Europe. The city was destroyed several times, after which it was rebuilt. The creators of the Slavic alphabet St. St. Ciril and Methodi also worked here. In 864 the Bulgarians converted to Christianity here.

Great to walk around and see the ruins. We had a day with mixed weather but didn't spoil our trip. Good little museum to check out and the staff are actually quite helpful if you have a question.

One of the most beautiful and inspirational places I have been to. There is big enough space for cars to park. Strongly recommend to visit it.

The oldest capital of Bulgaria is an amazing place to discover the history of the Bulgars. The combination of the museum and the ruines gives you a perfect image of how they lived. The English translations could use a bit of an update though, I think they used Google Translate...

I absolutely love this museum! Though a lack of funds limit the scope of exhibits, the museum staff have used their limited monetary resources to present a rich collection of beautiful historic artifacts in a meaningful and relevant manner. If you are in the area, you should definitely pay this place a visit.

Bulgaria is full of history and this site is only one small piece of this jigsaw/tapestry of life, that was so rich and advanced yet disappeared completely. The first Bulgarian capital I believe, Pliska.

Highly reccomended. We took a half day trip from Varna by car to visit Pliska and the archelogical site of the first Bulgarian Capitol as well as Madara Horsman not far from Pliska. It was just right. If you decide to visit Preslav as well, a full day trip by car would cover all sites. Preslav is the second capitol of First Bulgarian Kingdom.
