Glozhene Monastery

One hour from the Monastery is one of the most preserved caves i know i Bulgaria (together with Prohodna, not so far from here and to combine with Zlatna Palega). Here you feel the presence of nature or call it Bog or God even in discrepance with worldly desires. Very extraordinary, but i was scratched a lot on my legs and arms running throung wrong paths in the beginning, but there is an easier way forbidden for cars and only for pedestrians. +je

It is a little known and obscure monastery perched above the whole area on a small clifftop. There is a lot of history involved, and a few interesting facts are hard to believe. The Apostle of Freedom Vasil Levski was a frequent visitor and had a lot of meetings in the monastery. The road is in a very bad state, and the last few kilometres are a single line of traffic, but it is well worth it.

The Glozhene Monastery is an Eastern Orthodox monastery located on the northern slopes of Stara Planina, 12 km from Teteven. The roads there are quite narrow, steep, with turns and it is difficult for two cars to pass each other, but when you reach the monastery, a unique view opens up!

Incredible relation between manmade structure and landscape view...hardly recommend!

The Glozhene monastery is very interesting and beautiful. It is placed on a magnificent place on a rock hill above the village. The road is narrow and with bad asphalt but it is a must see if you are in this region.

There is a room that Vassil Levski used to hide and a tunnel leading to a cave nearby so he can escape. There is a little church inside that is very beautiful.

The parking is 3bgn per car and there is no entrance fee for the monastery. During weekdays there is no parking fee.

Almost 800 years old monastery. It’s hard to comprehend all the history it has. Quiet and peaceful.

Good place to visit, cannot enter with dogs 🐕.

Relatively easy access by car and walk, even if high up in the mountains. Spectacular vistas. Beautiful church. Important site in the Bulgarian history.

Very nice and worth seeing place!! The paved road is attached but partially damaged. But there are always passing places in oncoming traffic. If you drive slowly and control your car, no problem.

Beautiful and peaceful! Not entirely ready for summer- maintenance work. At the entrance was a sign for Morovitza peshtera , we hike for 30/40 min but We didn't find the cave - no signs on the path

One the best view you can see. Special energy. Calm and spiritual place.

We came here on horseback. We really enjoyed our trip here, and had a very delicious lunch. Beautiful place up in the mountains.

Nice place to visit with beautiful landscape. It is kids and pets friendly. There is a parking nearby. The road up and down is very narrow, so be extremely careful. Drive very slowly. You can see there the hiding place of Vasil Levski. He was escaping from the Turks. The monastery was also temporary home of Vasil Drumev. A small exhibition is organised there.

Absolutely magical place! Full of history, calm and timelessness.

Highly recommended! Spectacular view and great traditional kitchen. Nice place to spend an hour-hour and a half.

Very beautiful place. Definitely recommended to visit on a weekend. The entrance is Free, but you need to pay for parking - 1 leva for a bike and horse (?), 2 leva for a standard car, 3 for mini bus, and so on. Mind that the road there is very steep and narrow. Be prepared to reverse if there's a car coming up. Also, I think the most beautiful view that you can photograph is from the window in the mini museum. Picture attached :)

A breathtaking place, the monastery seems to be perched on the top of the mountain and watches the world below from the height of its past and the history it closely guards. Difficult to access on a narrow asphalt road dotted with rose bushes and taken over by mother nature in places, but this only enhances the feeling of some other times and without feeling outside time and space in a flight of the soul in the essence of being. We promised ourselves that one day we would come again and dedicate more time to ourselves and this magical place.

Great place! One of those “must visit” list.
