We’ve assessed several college essays of applicants admitted to a wide range of schools, including Ivy League institutions. While extremely diverse, these pieces generally had the following characteristics in common.
1. Introspective and reflective
Many English teachers tell their students not to use the first-person “I” in their essays. While this might be the standard for some academic essays, the college essay should include that “I.” What’s more, it should include a lot of that “I”!
This can be understandably uncomfortable for students, many of whom may simply not be used to talking about themselves openly and declaratively on a page. It can also feel awkward from a stylistic point of view for students who are not used to writing in the first-person.
Yet colleges want to hear your words in your own voice, and they are especially interested in learning more about your perspectives on the world and insights gleaned from your various life experiences. That’s why many successful college essays are highly introspective, full of the writer’s active reflections on what they’ve learned, how they view the world, and who they are.
We typically see the bulk of such introspection at the end of an essay, where the writer summarizes these reflections (although this is by no means standard), as we can see in the conclusion to Erica’s essay here, which describes her earlier attempt to write and publish a novel:
Sometimes, when I’m feeling insecure about my ability as a novelist I open up my first draft again, turn to a random chapter, and read it aloud. Publishing that first draft would have been a horrible embarrassment that would have haunted me for the rest of my life. Over the past half-decade, I’ve been able to explore my own literary voice, and develop a truly original work that I will be proud to display. This experience taught me that “following your dreams” requires more than just wishing upon a star. It takes sacrifice, persistence, and grueling work to turn fantasy into reality.
In her personal statement, Aja reflects deeply on what she specifically learned from an experience described earlier on in the piece:
I found from my experiment and questioning within my mind that my practices distinguished me from others, thereby allowing me to form relationships on the basis of common interest or personality, rather than cultural similarities, that summer. I valued the relationships more, and formed a deep connection with my lab partner, whom I had found was similar to me in many ways.
Notice how both of these selections contain a lot of that first-person voice, which is critical to elaborating perspectives, learning points, and introspective thoughts. And did we mention that admissions officers are looking for those specific perspectives, learning points, and thoughts that compose who you are?
2. Full of a student’s voice
An academic transcript can be revealing to admissions officers. The same goes for recommendation letters and resumes. But it’s hard to convey an individual voice in these application components. The college essay is your prime vehicle for speaking directly to colleges in your own words about what matters to you.
Successful college essays thus veer away from the formal voice many students employ when writing academic essays. Rather, they showcase a student’s unique way of expressing themselves on a page, which can be, for example, humorous, informal, intimate, lyrical, and/or speculative.
Voice is at the forefront of Emma’s essay about her love for “all that is spicy:”
I am an aspiring hot sauce sommelier. Ever since I was a child, I have been in search for all that is spicy. I began by dabbling in peppers of the jarred variety. Pepperoncini, giardiniera, sports peppers, and jalapeños became not only toppings, but appetizers, complete entrées, and desserts. As my palate matured, I delved into a more aggressive assortment of spicy fare. I’m not referring to Flamin’ Hot Cheetos, the crunchy snack devoured by dilettantes. No, it was bottles of infernal magma that came next

Noakhali Science and Technology University (NSTU) is the highest educational institution in Noakhali. It is a public university in the coastal terrain Noakhali of Bangladesh. It is the 27th public university (out of 32) and fifth science and technology university in Bangladesh. NSTU has one of the most beautiful, pleasant & very good educational environment, rich Library and well organized campus among the Universities in Bangladesh.

The creation of a band of skilled manpower equipped with latest knowledge of science and technology is a must to achieve a prestigious position in this modern world. As a part of ensuring quality education, with immense expectations of the southern coastal inhabitants of Bangladesh, a new university named Noakhali Science and Technology University (abbreviated as NSTU) was established on 15 July 2001 enacting the Noakhali Science and Technology University Act 2001. Finally, it started its academic activities on 22 June 2006. The inclusion of the study of humanities implies the urge felt by the concerned authority to create leaders who will fashion a more humane and just world. The university not only engages itself in teaching and research but also provides societal services for the benefit of rural and urban populations.

At present, it has six faculties (namely Faculty of Engineering & Technology, Faculty of Science, Faculty of social Science and humanities, Faculty of Business administration, faculty of education sciences and the faculty of Law) and two institutes (namely Institute of Information Science and Institute of Information Technology). The faculties include twenty-eight degree offering departments namely Department of Computer Science and Telecommunication Engineering (CSTE), Department of Fisheries & Marine Science (FIMS), Department of Pharmacy, Department of Applied Chemistry and Chemical Engineering (ACCE), Department of Microbiology, Department of Applied Mathematics, Department of English, Department of Environmental Science and Disaster Management (ESDM), Department of Food Technology and Nutrition Science (FTNS), Department of Business Administration, Department of Information and Communication Engineering (ICE), Department of Economics, Department of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering (BGE), Department of Bangla, Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Department of Agriculture (AG), Department of Statistics, Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE),Department of Zoology, Department of Law, Department of Education, Department of Education Administration, Department of Sociology, Department of tourism and Hospitality management, Department of Management Information Systems, Department of Social Administration, Department of Bangladesh and Liberation War Studies and Department of Oceanography.

Co-curricular activities are extensively patronized. There are students’ organizations like NSTUMUNA, NSTU Debating Society, and NSTU English Club, NSTU Business Club etc. which work to develop leadership capacity of a student by promoting the art of public speaking, reasoning and logical thinking. Besides, NSTU Blood Donors Society, DreamBazz Filmz, Moshal, Protiddhoni, NSTU Photographic Society etc are there whose activities aim at the formation of a non-communal and progressive cultural mind. The slogan “Green NSTU, Clean NSTU” has been an inspiring tonic among all in keeping this naturally blessed green campus neat and clean. The calm, quiet & soothing environment of the campus, modeled upon the western modern universities like the University of Cambridge, is a wonderful escape for the researchers from the hustle and bustle of town life for an uninterrupted concentration on their study and research. Now-a-days, NSTU is lovingly addressed as The Cambridge of the Coastal Terrain. Each member of NSTU family is trying hard to make this addressing a reality.

You all are recommended to visit NSTU to enjoy the beauty of the Campus!

Noakhali Science and Technology University is very well decorated and nicely designed campus. Everyone must visit this University when visited in Noakhali, Bangladesh. It has a large nearly rectangular shaped playground and also have a pond namely 'Nil Dighi'. There also seats to sit beside the pond. Usually couples spend their free time on there. There are 2 large student hostel for girls and total 3 hostels for girls. Those are well designed and one is round shape (Zero Hall). There also 2 hostels for male students. Let's come to its area, it is about 101 acres. Finally, I can say that the University is really wonderful for studying and living there in hostels(Hall) for students.
Another thing is, it hold the 2nd position on QC World University ranking on the basis of "Science and Technology University" category in Bangladesh.
