Azimpur Graveyard, established in 1807, is one of the oldest cemeteries in Dhaka, Bangladesh, covering 34 acres of land. It is a place of historical significance and solemnity, housing more than 3,900 permanent graves and numerous temporary ones that are reused every two years. The graveyard underwent a significant renovation in 2020, which included landscaping to transform it into a green space that serves both the deceased and the living. Designed by architect Rafiq Azam, the project aimed to create a sacred space where people can visit to pay respects to their loved ones, rather than just a storeroom for dead bodies. The renovation also introduced a walkway along the graveyard’s length, enhancing its accessibility and aesthetic appeal. Azimpur Graveyard stands as a testament to the city’s history and its commitment to honoring the past while providing a serene environment for reflection and remembrance.

One of the oldest graveyard of Dhaka city. Very large capacity and famous graveyard. Forests may be gorgeous but there is nothing more alive than a tree that learns how to grow in a cemetery. On this COVID situation every dead body needs death certificate and commissioner certificate of individuals area. It has also has a larger mosque.

Azimpur Graveyard in Dhaka, Bangladesh, isn't just a final resting place. It's a living tapestry of history, spirituality, and surprisingly, urban renewal. Founded in the 17th century, it holds the remains of renowned figures like the 1952 Language Movement martyrs, weaving itself into the city's cultural fabric.

My Experience:

Transformation: Entering Azimpur was a stark contrast to my expectations. Gone were the gloomy, overgrown graveyards of popular imagination. Instead, I found a vibrant green oasis in the heart of Dhaka. The 2020 renovation transformed the landscape with manicured lawns, paved pathways, and thoughtfully placed benches. It felt more like a serene park than a graveyard, encouraging quiet reflection and connection with nature.

History and Heritage: The history whispered through the air. Tombstones with faded inscriptions told stories of lives lived, battles fought, and legacies left behind. The nearby Mayor Hanif Mosque, also renovated, stands as a sentinel of faith and community.

Accessibility and Innovation: I was impressed by the graveyard's modern amenities. A digital database allows online searches for specific graves, and a virtual tour option enables those unable to visit physically to pay their respects. This accessibility extends to maintenance; well-marked pathways and designated parking make maneuvering easy.

Points to Consider:

While peaceful, Azimpur can also be busy, especially during religious holidays. Respectful attire and behavior are expected, as it's a place of mourning and reverence.

Overall Impression:

Azimpur Graveyard is more than just a burial ground. It's a testament to Dhaka's rich history, a space for quiet contemplation, and a green oasis in the urban jungle. The recent renovations have breathed new life into this historic site, making it accessible and welcoming to all. I recommend it to anyone seeking a unique and thought-provoking experience in Dhaka.

Biggest & oldest graveyard in all over the Bangladesh. People come here to buried & to see the graves of their near & dears who are deceased. This is a government authorised graveyard & the fee is very cheap. Many deceased are buried here. This is the last destination for all kind of people. The environment is very silent here.

The oldest and the largest Muslim graveyard in Dhaka. There are two entrances here , one is on the southern side and the other one is on the northern side. Muslims usually visit their beloveds graves on special days like Friday, Shab-e-Barat and Eid days. On the 15th of Shaban (Shab-e-Barat) night it becomes over crowded. People from all over the place come here to pay their respects.
