National Press Club

The National Press Club of Bangladesh is steeped in a rich history that mirrors the nation’s own journey towards independence and democracy. The club’s premises, once a residential building for the renowned physicist Satyendra Nath Bose, became the rallying point for journalists and intellectuals. It was here, amidst the echoes of typewriters and the fervor of impassioned discussions, that the seeds of change were sown.
The club endured the ravages of the 1971 Liberation War, emerging as a symbol of resilience and rebirth in independent Bangladesh. Renamed the National Press Club, it stands today not only as a testament to the free press but also as a tribute to the indomitable spirit of the Bangladeshi people. It’s a place where history isn’t just remembered; it’s alive in the stories that continue to unfold within its walls. The National Press Club remains a bastion of journalism, a place where the pen is celebrated as mightier than the sword, and where the pursuit of truth is an unending quest.

The national press club is the place which is known as the parliament of the common people of Bangladesh. Each and every day people gather here to express their opinions, expectations, demands for various issues.

Nothing spacial...this is my own space.near about 35 years i am with Press Club.

National press club is also used as the open parliament for the common people where we express our opinion, our demand and expectation of justice. Everyday lot of meetings, protest, human chain and press conference held here. A lot of journalists from print and electronic media stay here to collect and broadcast news. As a result police also stays here to keep the situation under control and road in front normal. This has become one of the most important places to us.

The structure and ideals of the press club are not exactly the same in all countries. The National Press Club in Dhaka is the main press club in Bangladesh. There are separate press clubs in almost every district and important area. The structure and aims and objectives of these self-regulated institutions are unique.

National Press Club is the professional club for journalists of Bangladesh located in the Capital Dhaka. The National Press club was founded in 1954 as the East Pakistan Press Club. It was formed to be run by an elected committee guided by its rules and regulations. The Government of East Pakistan rented out a building at 18 Topkhana Road at a monthly rent of Tk 100 to be used as the press club headquarters.The building before 1947 was a residential house of Dhaka University and was once residence to physicist Satyendra Nath Bose.

The first life member of the club was N. M. Khan who was chief secretary of the provincial government. Mujibur Rahman Khan was the first president of the club. On 25 March Pakistan army started Operation Searchlight and shelled the club, the structure was completely destroyed. After the Independence of Bangladesh it was named the National Press club. In 1977 the building was leased to the club permanently and the government of Bangladesh covered the expense of a new building. In 1995 the Clubs logo and emblem were selected
