Global warming has been a recurring problem, and agriculture has been taking the brunt of it. Unusual weather patterns that occur as a result of this phenomenon have a terrible impact on agriculture.

One of the crops most impacted by these changes is rice, a staple diet for billions of people. Global warming has negatively impacted rice production in Bangladesh, where crop yields have decreased, and food security is a major problem.

But scientists in the agricultural sector are trying their best to introduce genetically modified crops that produce high yields and can sustain the harshest effects of global warming. Recently, Bangladesh Institute of Nuclear Agriculture (BINA) researchers introduced a new variety of rice paddy: BINA Dhan-25, which can be a great substitute for Basmati rice imported in tons each year.

This new variety of rice more closely resembles Miniket than Basmati. Miniket is not a real variety of rice; it's just a variety of low-quality coarse rice that has been thinned and polished to be sold as Miniket at higher prices.

Stripped of fibre and other potential organic compounds, this rice delivers little nutritional value, so the government asks people to refrain from buying Miniket rice from the market.

On the other hand, BINA-25 is naturally produced thin, bigger in size, cooks just perfectly, tastes good as premium-quality rice, and yields 7.5 to 8.5 tons per hectare, according to Dr Sakina Khanam, the lead researcher behind this project.

Apart from the rice quality, the plants are pest-resistant and can withstand floods and other natural disasters for a few days.

According to Mizanur Rahman, the Deputy Director of DAE, farmers in 17 Upazilas of Comilla have cultivated this particular type of rice on 17 hectares of land for the first time. The yield has exceeded expectations, and the plant can endure natural disasters due to its hardiness. He further stated that this rice is of premium quality and could be exported.

Moreover, it requires less pesticide, fertilizer, and irrigation, so BINA-25 cultivation requires even less farming costs for the farmers with higher returns. If it can be sold as a substitute for Basmati rice, the import cost will be lower for the government, and buying it will also be cheaper for consumers.

BINA-25 has shown great promise as a solution to the rice production problems in Bangladesh. Its resilient and highly productive characteristics make it an ideal crop for Bangladeshi farmers, and its premium quality and export potential could help boost the country's economy. The government should invest more to increase BINA-25 production, and people should be aware of this cost-friendly rice.

It remains to be seen how successful this new variety of rice will be, but it offers hope for a more sustainable and secure future for rice production in Bangladesh
