Sreenagar Bazar, one of the oldest and most popular markets in Munshiganj district, was engulfed by a massive fire on Sunday night, destroying hundreds of shops and causing millions of taka in losses.

The fire broke out around 10 pm at a chemical storehouse near the entrance of the market and quickly spread to the adjacent shops, according to witnesses and fire officials. The flames were fanned by strong winds and reached the other side of the market within minutes.

More than 20 fire-fighting units from Munshiganj, Dhaka, Narayanganj and Madaripur rushed to the spot and battled the blaze for over six hours. They finally managed to bring the fire under control around 4 am on Monday.

The cause of the fire is still unknown and an investigation has been launched, said Md. Shafiqul Islam, the deputy director of Fire Service and Civil Defence in Munshiganj. He said the fire was one of the worst in the district's history and estimated the damage at around Tk 100 crore.

The market, which dates back to the Mughal era, is a hub of trade and commerce in the region. It sells a variety of goods, including clothes, electronics, cosmetics, jewellery, books, stationery, groceries, fruits, vegetables, fish, meat and poultry.

The shop owners and traders expressed their shock and grief over the incident and demanded compensation from the government. They said they had lost their livelihoods and savings in the fire and had no insurance or alternative sources of income.

The local administration and the district disaster management committee have formed a seven-member probe committee to assess the extent of the damage and provide relief to the affected people. The committee has been asked to submit its report within 15 days.

The district commissioner of Munshiganj, Md. Moniruzzaman Talukder, visited the site on Monday morning and assured the shop owners of all possible assistance from the government. He said the market would be rebuilt as soon as possible and the fire safety measures would be improved.
