One of the oldest mosques in Bangladesh located at Shibganj Police Station in Chapainawabganj District. This mosque is a witness of 500 years of history. It is built in the style of Hussain-Shah architecture. The mosque is made of bricks. There is a layer of stone on it. There are three Chauchala domes. These chauchala domes in the middle are decorated with roses on the inside. The mosque is surrounded by four towers. Their land is octagonal in shape. The towers have step-by-step ring work.
Must visit place in Chapainawabganj….

A beautiful example of Bengal Sultani architecture that's still in very good condition, requesting everyone to respect the monument and don't try to harm it and requesting to authorities to repair it with skilled workers who know the work, just giving a shape without the original motifs can't be enough

This is the most well maintained monument among all here in the sonsmosjid area. I have visited this place more than a dozen times now.

There is a public toilet for both men and women and a well equipped ozukhana for Muslim praying people.

There is no garage for parking bikes, you have to leave the car and bikes at your own risk.

I feel wonder when I visited this place. There is many many of this mosque so don’t want add more. Just feel sad to find that authorities didn’t keep the heritage untouched. Inside many electrical wires, electric fan and others construction looks ugly. Outside graveyard not preserved properly. Heroic Martyr Captain Mohiuddin Jahangir tomb is there. I lost in mind to be there.

Chhoto Shona Masjid is a prominent historical mosque located in the southeastern region of Bangladesh. Also known as Chhota Sona Masjid or Small Golden Mosque, it stands as a testament to the rich architectural heritage of the Bengal Sultanate. This small but magnificent mosque is situated in Gaur, an ancient capital city that was once a thriving cultural and commercial center during the medieval period.

The Chhoto Sona Masjid was built in the 15th century, around 1493, during the reign of Sultan Alauddin Hussain Shah, the second sultan of the Bengal Sultanate. It was constructed as a smaller version of the larger and more renowned Sona Masjid (Golden Mosque), which was erected nearby. The mosque was built using locally available materials, predominantly brick and terracotta, which were meticulously crafted to create intricate and exquisite designs.

The architectural style of Chhoto Sona Masjid reflects the fusion of Indo-Islamic and Bengali Sultanate architecture. The mosque features a single dome supported by four corner towers, giving it a unique and eye-catching appearance. The central dome is adorned with intricate terracotta ornamentation, including floral motifs, geometric patterns, and calligraphic inscriptions in Arabic script. The facades of the mosque are intricately decorated with terracotta plaques depicting scenes from everyday life, mythical creatures, and religious symbols.

Inside the mosque, visitors can find a spacious prayer hall with rows of slender columns and arches, creating a harmonious and serene atmosphere. The mihrab, indicating the direction of Mecca, is exquisitely decorated with terracotta and stone carvings, showcasing the exceptional craftsmanship of the artisans of that era.

Chhoto Sona Masjid is not only a religious site but also an architectural marvel that attracts tourists and history enthusiasts from all over the world. It stands as a symbol of the glorious past of Bengal and serves as a reminder of the rich cultural heritage of the region.

Over the years, the mosque has undergone several renovations and restorations to preserve its historical significance. Efforts have been made to protect and conserve the delicate terracotta artwork, ensuring that future generations can continue to appreciate the beauty of this architectural gem.

Visiting Chhoto Sona Masjid offers a unique opportunity to delve into the rich history and cultural heritage of Bangladesh. The mosque stands as a testament to the architectural brilliance of the Bengal Sultanate and serves as a reminder of the country's vibrant past.

Granite tiles are used in Sona Mosque. Chota Sona Mosque built in Sultani style of architecture has 12 domes made of brick. And the wall around the mosque is about 6 feet wide and covered with stone tiles inside and outside. There are 4 corner minarets at the four corners of the mosque.
