Middle of the Eighteenth Century, Government Mail, exclusively for Government communications was established between Kolkata and Dhaka. In 1862 mail service was run by Police Department. Mail circulation cost was borne by the Land Lords, which was called Post Tax. This system continued till 1906. In 1886 there were 11 Post Offices in today's Bangladesh, which was increased by 256 in 1911. In August 1947 East Pakistan Circle was established and started functioning from Jagannath Hall Building, Dhaka. In the same time first Head Post Office named Sadarghat Head Post Office was established at Sadarghat area. At that time there were 32 Post Offices in Dhaka city. Dhaka GPO started functioning from 10th March 1963. From the very beginning it was in present building.

During the liberation war, Mujib Nagar Government established Postal Service in Bangladesh. Just after the independence of Peoples Republic of Bangladesh The Directorate General, Bangladesh Post Office started functioning from 20th December, 1971. Bangladesh Post Office is a Government organization presided over by the Director General, under the Post and Telecommunication Division, Ministry of Post, Telecommunication and Information Technology.

Gpo is a place from where every postal service is control. It's located on gulistan beside the baitul mukarram mosjid. Through this place is located in gulistan so there is a lots of shop around it. Everyday this place become crowded by the customer.
Basically I used from jatrabari the shikor and kwajababa bus to go gulistan.
U will get the bus of gulistan from every part of Dhaka.

GPO General post office is the centeral office of country’s postal service. Moreover bangladesh government calculated this point as a center point of not only for Dhaka but also for whole country. This office service includes postal,EMO, money transfer within local and international.
Recently nagad (নগদ) is their very attractive product by mobile money transfer service.
Here i have gone several times. It is located just beside of Baitul Mukarram national mosque and Bangabondhu International Football Stadium.
HUGE gathered zone. All service is ok. But they need to more cleaning of their bathroom. One mosque is there for prayimg. Huge car parking area also.

The Bangladesh Post Office (Bengali: বাংলাদেশ ডাক বিভাগ) also known by trade name Bangla Post is responsible for providing postal service in Bangladesh. It is an attached department of the Ministry of Post and Telecommunication (Bangladesh).[2] This ministry is concerned with the policymaking for its two attached departments. The Director General of Bangladesh Post Office is Sushanta Kumar Mandal.

The Main Services of the Bangladesh post office are to mail Letters, Post Cards, Parcel, News Paper & Periodicals and Book or Packet. The general delivery time is 2–3 days depending upon the distance and communication of destination.

Electronic Money Transfer Service (EMTS) is one of the service which started operations 26 March 2010. This service was commercially launched in a limited scope (in 104 post offices) on 10 May 2010. However, in response of overwhelming demand, this service has now been expanded in 2750 post offices throughout the country including all district Head Post Offices, Upazila and important/busy rural Post Offices. This service has got wide acceptability and popularity within a short period of time, which can be regarded as a significant achievement of the present government.

Postal Cash Card is a debit card. Start operation at 26 March 2010. Now available at all district, upazila and important/selected post offices. Purchase a postal cash card will cost BDT 45.00 which includes minimum balance of BDT 10.00. No yearly charge or profit/interest against customer balance. Service: Cash in, Cash out, Balance transfer to other card, Transaction with POS & ATM located at post offices or QCASH marked POS/ATM booths.

Electronic Mail Service was introduced as "E-Post" from 16 Aug 2000. The ePost service enabled people to send and receive messages or scanned images through e-mail from selected Post offices in the country. This service is now available in 16 Head Post offices, namely Dhaka GPO, Chittagong GPO, Sylhet HPO, Moulavibazar HPO, Feni HPO and Comilla HPO. Noakhali HPO, Mymensingh HPO, Jessore HPO, Kushtia HPO, Barisal HPO, Bogra HPO, Sirajganj HPO From 2015 the Post department started its e-commerce services.
