This is one of rare roman villas left around this area and it's amazing that the foundation it was built on is still underneath it.
Many original carvings and stones were found and implemented in it.
The only thing is, it wasn't well maintained last decade or so, but someone needs to take care of that and invest some effort and time in it (money can probably be found in European Union fonds since it's protected by UNESCO).
It's a shame that the restaurant placed there and horses aren't in best shape either.
It has so much more potential!

MOGORJELO

Arheološka iskopavanja od 1899. do 1903. godine pokazala su da se građevinski kompleks na Mogorjelu sastoji iz više faza. Najstarije građevine datiraju iz 1. vijeka, kada je lokalitet služio kao zemljoradnički centar (villa rustica fructuaria).
Mogorjelo je opskrbljivalo rimski grad Naronu (Metković) i vjerovatno služilo u obrani grada i okoline.
Postojalo je nekoliko građevina koje su bila povezane hodnicima, a u središtu je bila izgrađena stambena zgrada, kupalište i zgrada za poljoprivrednu proizvodnju. Postojala je i uljara te mlin i pekara. Ciglana, radionica za izradu keramičkih posuda te štala bile su izgrađene izvan kompleksa.
Ovaj objekt je izgorio u III vijeku.

U 4. vijeku na njegovom mjestu je osnovano veliko državno imanje, tzv. dominium. Vila se ograđuje velikim zidom i nastaje Rimska utvrda – castrum, poput Dioklecijanove palate u Splitu.
U Rimsko carstvo su počeli prodirati prvi barbari, pa se uglovi i ulazi pojačavaju isturenim tornjevima.

Zapadni Goti oko 401. – 403. su provalili u rimsku provinciju Dalmaciju i razorili vilu na Mogorjelu.

Krajem 5. vijeka ovdje su izgrađene dvije građevine bazilikalnog izgleda i jedna stambena zgrada. Ove građevine su razorene tokom ranog srednjeg vijeka.

Na mjestu velikih zgrada je izrastao tokom vremena brežuljak, na kojem su stanovnici iz okolnih mjesta počeli ukopavati svoje mrtve. Cijeli lokalitet je do kraja 19. vijeka služio kao groblje. Dolaskom Austro-Ugarske počinju arheološka iskopavanja.

Mogorjelo je nacionalni spomenik Bosne i Hercegovine.
