The Cathedral Ranges hikes are an absolutely must for any enthusiast!
There are 'Grade 3' hikes available up to Sugarloaf Saddle, for a suitable challenge and absolutely beautiful view.
The ranges also have 'Grade 5' hikes up to Sugerloaf Saddle, which I highly encourage if you're looking for a genuine challenge!

The 'Grade 5' hikes up require hiking boots with serious grip, experience with confident rock scrambling, and are only recommend in clear, still weather.
During rain or in windy conditions, the rock scrambling is dangerous and best to be avoided.
The Wells Cave climb is also a tight 30cm squeeze on top of a very steep scramble.
These are some of the most challenging hikes, and incredibly rewarding if you can reach the peak!

For reference: The 'Trail Hiking Australia Grading System' ranges from 1 (a comfortable walk), to 5 (suitable for only experienced hikers or rock climbers).

A fantastic short hike from the car park to the top of Sugarloaf. Mt. Sugarloaf is at the most southern end of the ridgeline of the Cathedral Ranges in Buxton/Taggerty.
You will need to have no fear of heights and be rather agile too.
If you venture to the right as you start your hike you will be going via the Wells Cave track and will need to be quite fit and not overweight, (no offense intended), but the chasm between the rock is tilted and quite narrow.
If you get to the top, the views are breath taking over farmland and treed mountain after mountain.

Astonishing view with a good challenge. We went sugarloaf saddle via canyon track on a very sunny day. The sun gave a lot of pressure on us because we didn’t bring enough water.

Grade 5 hike - I love that stuff.
It is preferred to have a good fitness level as the route requires full body mechanisms to get over rocks and climb up the steeper parts.
If you dont have a fitness baseline, you will get through it but you might be cursing through it.

Great hiking. It is a bit challenging. So, get prepared. Not suitable for little kids or people with no rock climbing experience,

Fabulous large shelter that was rebuilt after the Black Saturday bush fires. What used to be a small, enclosed shelter is now a large, open and well designed place to have a bite to eat, stay out of the rain, prepare for your trip up the mountain or unpack at the end. Tables and benches available for use.
Toilets nearby. Running water. Plenty of carparking.

Decent picnic area, very silent and peaceful. No bbqs though unfortunately so you'll have to bring a portable stove or cooktop for this activity.

Car park, picnic ground, toilet and water tank. It is located very high so if you will leave your car here then walk Southern Track and leave it at Jawbone Carpark you will need to walk up the road to get back to your car. All the time up the road. Very tiresome after the whole track. If you only have one car leave it at jawbone carpark - walk up the road to this parking and start track here. Especially if you want to climb Wells Track. If you have 2 cars (travelling with friends) leave one car at Jawbone and drive here in other car and start you Track.
