Fernance's Crossing Culvert c 1831

This is a lovely drive. You can imagine being there back in time just as it is. The only tell tale of today being the bitumen road that now accompanies this historic route. It amazes me how the Convict labourers put stone together to create these structures that adorn the Old North Rd / Convict Way. Worth the detour via Wisemans Ferry south or historic Wollombi north.

Kids enjoyed this place. It led to a good discussion and exploration of a bit of history on the great north road, convicts in Australia, and some stories about convicts and books for them to read. I think it’s a very good way to get them interested about the history.

But this or other such historic builds along the road didn’t have any sign board at least 500m before or so, and we missed a few on our way. I think it would be nice to have a couple of sign boards, especially bcos this road is winding along hills so it’s easy to miss.
