I stumbled upon this Newport gem when I took the wrong train and I'm really glad I did!

I enjoyed the delicious special of Coastal Coconut Prawn & Calamari Curry and it was so flavoursome!! A perfect mix of chilli, coconut, and other spices to satisfy my hunger.

Would definitely visit again, perhaps with a friend!

One of the best customer service along with incredible Malaysian food. Mostly for takeaways with very limited seating. Reasonably priced and they toned down the spicy level for our kids too. Thank you so much for the delicious food and hospitality ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

We arrived when they were about to close and the owner saw how disappointed we were and was nice enough to let us in for us to have a late lunch! The meal was authentic and packed with favour. Next time we will come back for the Laksa! Place is small with some seating inside and tables outside.

It’s well known that my favourite food is Malaysian, although other cuisines do come in a close second and third.
For my birthday, my partner Jim, took me to a restaurant in Newport right near Newport Railway Station.

The owner Noel and his delightful host Veronica make a fabulous team. Noel has not just a passion for his food but for life itself. He creates a welcoming atmosphere of warmth and generous hospitality. Kuala Lumpur born, he learnt to cook from his mother and carries on that tradition for his loyal customers in little old Newport.

While we dined, time and time again, people would drop in to place or pick up their order and everyone is on a first name basis. Noel asks about their day, their family and connects with them in a way that is authentic, genuine and frankly, quite refreshing.

Noel took our order of vegetarian curry puffs, beef rendang and a roti with peanut sauce but for me, he made something not from the menu but his own creation of noodles, vegetables and chicken.
So let me unpack the awesomeness of our meal.

Vegetarian curry puffs. Who hasn’t had curry puffs where the pastry around the edges was thick and a little crunchy and lacked plenty of filling. Me! All the time! Well not here at Hawkers Lane. The pastry was delicate and light, generously filled with vegetables. I could order a half dozen just as a meal in itself.
As a Malaysian food aficionado, these are by far, the best curry puffs ever!

Beef Rendang. A popular menu favourite and Noel’s version was gently spicy with a sauce that wasn’t too sweet. Served with steamed rice, Jim said it was the best he’s ever had.

My meal. Chicken, vegetables and noodles was made by Noel for me. Wasn’t on the menu, just made for me with ingredients I told him I love most. Fresh and generous portion size.

Roti with peanut sauce. The roti was well cooked but the peanut sauce was a ‘jammy’ combination of peanuts and other ingredients that were luscious and saporous. This should be bottled and sold to the public.

Before we left, Jim tried a seafood curry puff and again, a culinary treat.

There’s a rumour that people ring through their takeaway order at Yarraville, jump off at Newport and pick up their order and get back on their next train.

Obviously as a traveller and reviewer, I’ve dined across the globe and I’m always on the hunt for good Malaysian food and here it was - only a few suburbs away from my home. We shall return - soon!
Tera makasi Noel.

Notes: cash only but ATM next door. A total of 9 stools indoors and occasionally outdoor dining. Wheelchair accessible but tables are high so would be challenging to eat at a table. BYO is fine. Good parking. Kid friendly. Awesome takeaway service. Accessible by public transport. Dietaries catered for if you let them know.

This place is absolutely boss. They make there roti canai fresh. There beef redang was unreal. Satay chicken phenomenal. Meats ultra fresh and good quality. And didn't make me feel fatty like I ate out or something. Highly recommend this place. Arguably the best Malaysian in Melbourne!

Has been a while since our last visit but the food is just as fabulous as it always is, took some fresh menu photos too as the menu I had at home was out of date.

I ordered the Char kway teow, takeaway. Serving size was very generous for such a standard price. Quality was more than satisfactory.
It's a quite place to take the wifey for lunch or dinner.
Staff were polite and friendly.
Will be returning to try many more items from the menu.

Found this gem of a place via Google Map. The curry chicken and fried kway teow were authentically Asian and super yummy! Nice food for a very cold spring. Definitely worth the $10!

Much overlooked brilliant little place that serves fantastic food with minimal wait times. I've lived in the area for many years however only found it recently and I wish I'd found it a long time ago. I'm still working through the menu however so far the satay chicken, nasi goreng (all variations) and beef rendang have been absolutely delicious.

I highly recommend you try it.

Service is fantastic too.

Hawkers Lane in Newport is one of the “secret gems” of the local Newport/Williamstown community. Not only do you get to “transport yourself” instantly to a variety of Malaysian/Indian/Indonesian type locations with their delicious & authentic street food selection, but the owner “Noel” is, quite simply, a Hall Street favourite. He infuses his love and positive character into every dish that leaves the kitchen, and I can tell you after eating there a few times a week, every week for a number of years now, he never fails to deliver a delicious meal with a smile and friendly chat.
Do yourself a favor and go discover what all of the locals already know… Hawkers Lane is fabulous ❤

Luel treated us like family. The food here is the real deal - jam-packed with flavour, and was tailored to our spice needs. Couldn't recommend this restaurant more - look forward to returning soon.

I thought I have tried the best laksa in Melbourne till I visited Hawkers Lane in Newport.
I was very skeptical at first when my daughter kept pestering me to try out as she kept telling me that it is so good compared to all the laksa she had tried before.
Finally, we made it to the shop and WOW, it was really really good ! I believe that this is the best laksa I had so far in Melbourne, no joke ! Definitely my to go Laksa place moving forward.

I also tried their Claypot rice (minus the claypot 😁😁) and it was really good as well. Check it out and if Noel is around, you will be entertained while having your food !

Keep up the good work, Noel !

We had a great time here. Noel was the best host, our faces hurt from laughing and smiling. His suggestions were outstanding. I can't wait to go back and let him show off some of his dishes.
The 5 spice fish and the curried beef are a dishes I would do again in a heartbeat!

Really friendly staff made us feel welcome and comfortable immediately. The spring rolls are light and crunchy and 8 per serve makes you feel that you've spent your money well. The curry puffs are just spicy enough to be pleasant and the plum sauce is incredible.
I would give them 6 stars if I could👌🏻
