Matt Barnes Orthopaedic Hip and Knee Surgeon

Doctor Barnes is extremely professional.

Rather than immediately booking me in for a consultation, he has reviewed my medical history and my GP referral first. Consequently, he decided it is better for me to go for additional scans before the consultation, which probably saved me lots of time.

He has even suggested that one of his colleagues might be even more helpful with my specific issues.

Frankly, this is the professional behaviour we need in today's medical world, refreshing to be honest.

I was referred to Matt by my Sports Doctor after rupturing my ACL doing gymnastics. From organising the initial consultation, to the surgery itself and the post operative care I found Matt and his team to always be highly professional. Everything was a breeze. Matt doesn't rush you, he thoroughly explains all treatment options honestly and never took a surgery only approach to treatment. After learning I also have progressive degenerative damage to my other knee from doing gymnastics, Matt has continued to display nothing but ongoing professionalism and care by explaining the treatment options I have and creating a clear and honest path forward from here. I highly recommend Matt to anyone who has sporting knee injuries or needing any form of knee surgery.

I have had both of my hips replaced by Matt, in the last 2 years and I’m 38. The last THR was 6 months ago and right now I am overseas skiing. I cannot get over how strong my hips feel and how different skiing with actual working hips is in comparison to before (turns out hip and glute strength is imperative to staying upright). I can’t thank you enough Matt for your work. I notice the difference daily, not just while skiing, but this is the most dramatic example. The admin side of Matt’s business is also exceptionally smooth and nothing is too much to ask. I would absolutely recommend Matt to anyone needing an orthopaedic surgeon.

Matt is a kind, yet incredibly intelligent, informative, considered surgeon! I saw multiple opinions with orthopaedic surgeons and I truly felt Matt considered my case as an individual patient and not a 'number'. I truly felt valued. This was very important to me as I am a 38 year old who underwent a total hip replacement and I am also an elite athlete who is desperate to regain previous form and function. Matt considered all of my short and long term goals and specifically considered the baring surface we chose, the surgical approach and best ways to achieve excellent outcomes. My husband had a workplace accident in 2014. It was suggested he obtain a second opinion on his knee injury following the shredding of his ligament and Matt came highly recommended. After consulting with Matt over a period of time, Matt's recommendation was to have a total knee replacement. This has been a huge success for my husband both physically and emotionally. I referred a family friend to Matt Barnes after she sustained an accident and had a severe injury. I am nothing but impressed by the amazing quality of care not only by the Surgeon himself, but also his team. The Practice Manager co-ordinated and organised everything that needed to be done investigations etc, for my dear friend who was in tremendous pain, to be seen in a timely manner given her circumstances. My friend was very fortunate enough to have such a skilled and caring Surgeon operate on her and we are all pleased with the outcome of her surgery. Very dissapointed as he refused to even see me regarding my knee problems , all I wanted was his opinion and recommendations about my knee issues. Damn sure it was because I didn't have private health cover, I was quite prepared to pay for the consultation and now left wondering about the total health care industry.

I highly recommend Matt Barnes. I had a bilteral knee arthoscope and with intense physiotherapy my reovery exceeded all my expectations.
Matt Barnes was our 3rd opinion as we were after the best orthopedic surgeon and his professionalism and skills proved he was. Extermley happy. He even took the time too return my call to myself after my surgery to answer some of my questions.
There was no wait time in his rooms and not much wait time on the dah of surgery. Very satisfied.

Matt did an incredible job, on September 12th of 2018, Matt performed an ACL reconstruction with Lemaire procedure on my left knee, after injury in the finals series for my football club (Australian Rules).

My physiotherapist during rehabilitation on multiple occasions commented on the quality of the feel of my knee post surgery. I managed to play the second half of our season in 2019, not once did i require strapping, braces, experience pain or issues with the knee.

On September 15th of 2019 I was able to complete a brilliant comeback story with our team having a dominant Grand Final victory, and being able to play a key role in the side and play like i'd never even had a knee issue.

Definitely would recommend Matt's skills for those in the unfortunate situation of requiring an ACL reconstruction.

G`day all, Im visiting from Remote Far North Queensland , Mr Barnes was highly recommended to me from a former patient of his that I met at the Rehab Pool in Essendon , So i contacted his staff and asked if I could get an appointment to see him for his opinion on my very sore Hip ASAP.
And I am happy to say after some confusion over Health Insurance was fixed, that i have been offered a cancellation appointment next week .

I first met Matt while lying in Epworth Emergency department, back in late August. I had had a fall fracturing my Humerus on my right arm. I had previously had a Shoulder Replacement by Dr Martin Richardson who wasn't available on the day so lucky was I to meet this young doctor which lifted my spirits heaps with his confident manner and friendly approach to my problems with his bed side manner and explanation of what he was going to have to try & do to repair my right arm with its new prosthesis, in a few days time. I was recovering well and was about to continue with my Rehab at "ERB" when I had another fall again I fractured the same arm below my last fracture closer to my elbow. Once again I was at Epworth Richmond and had Dr Matt Barnes visit me in the emergency department & was greeted with a friendly smile and positive approach for my next Operation. Again Dr Martin was Richardson wasn't available and Matt had to operate.
I have been very fortunate in having Dr Matt Barnes as my Orthopedic Surgeon on the above two Occasions. I would gladly recommend him to my friends and family if they are ever I need of such a doctor.
