Such a beautiful spot on the Maria Island. Must visit the Painted Cliffs when it's low tide to be able to see the whole cliffs. Very colorful and amazing group of cliffs. You can walk there or ride bicycle. From Darlington Probation Station to the Painted Cliffs is about 2.4 km one way, an easy walk. Highly recommended.

Beautiful colorful rocks especially under sunshine. You can walk along during low tide but still worth visiting during high tide with limited accessibility.

Our whole Maria Island day was perfect, best to do your own research on all it offers. Camping, cycling, walks etc. We got the ferry over and took our food and water for lunch, and only did a small walk to the painted cliffs but what a day it was, like a tropical island with its white sands and turquoise waters. The history of the island is also fascinating, we had a great day.

The painted cliffs are a short but uphill then downhill walk/cycle from Darlington (next to the ferry point). They are absolutely amazing and worth the short walk (25mins) to get there (with great views on the way). Just check the tide times before you go to maria island and aim to get to the painted cliffs for as low as the tide is going to be that day! Not too bad to walk around just be careful of slipping as there is not a path and is all uneven rock around the cliff. A must visit on maria island.

The walk to Painted Cliffs was one of the most accessibly beautiful and iconic scenery and wildlife spots on Maria Island.

The walk may be 1-2hr return to the Ferry dock or Darlington, depending on your pace and number of stops.

But it may be a little strenuous, up and down some long hills (spotted with families of wombats) overlooking the bay, and along a beach or two, and you must time it to a low tide in order to access the most iconic cliff faces.

Because it is so popular, expect many day trippers will make the same trek, requiring some negotiation of photo opportunities at peak times.

The painted cliffs are a must-visit. The walk was a perfect length (1hr loop) and had beautiful views. The cliffs were mesmorising- sandstone bands with layered patterns. It's also conveniently next to a beautiful beach with saphire-blue water and white sand. Highly recommend.

Maria Island should be on every visitor's list. It's such a beautiful place to visit, full of history, and so much wildlife
Painted cliffs are amazing to look at up close, and is 1 - 1.5hr return walk from Darlington.
You can catch a ferry over for the day, or treat yourself to an amazing cruise with lunch, seeing caves, seals, dolphins and whales if you're lucky, then spend few hours walking around part of the island.

Not too busy on a 1st of April. Beautiful day walking around...grey kangourous hiding in the bush, a few unscared wombats and wallabies as well as beautiful yellow bellied budgies. A very pleasant day on Maria Island. Best discovered on a bicycle as the place is pretty big and very accessible. Sunscreen and hat is highly recommended.

Stunning natural rock formation created by the ocean. Go at low tide so you can walk along the rocks. The colors are amazing and nothing I’ve seen before. There will probably be crowds so be prepared. Also watch your step as the rocks can be wet and slippery in places.

A white beach turns into orange cliffs that seem to be made of wood. Please take note of the time of low tide as it is the best moment to see the cliffs - when the water level is low, you can (carefully) walk along the cliff walls and admire the beautiful geology.

Really nice vist we went in @ 8.30 and back out at 12.30 I'm sure most people would want to stay longer to see more of the island but we were tired from climbing Mt Amos the day before! Highly recommend this stop off we brought our bikes which gave us time to see what we wanted in good time you can also hire bikes here!

Good place to see wombats and wallabies.
Can be windy but well worth the walk of about 5km return circuit from the jetty to the Painted Cliffs, some rock wallking.

It's not too far of a walk from the ferry drop off point, and it's amazing. Right at the beach! You'll need to check out the low tides time before you go.

Amazing spot! We got there just in time to see the beauty of the cliffs before the tide came in. Bit of a track from the ferry terminal so if you don’t want to walk that far, I’d recommend hiring a bike. Follow along on our adventures around Australia @sambolomio

A beautiful place to visit on Maria island. Just a walk away from the camping area or Penitentiary you can visit these colourfull cliffs. Added bonus is the magnificent white sandy beach right next door. Nature in all it's pure glory without the cars, peace!!

The most underrated attraction in Tasmania! 💯

The Painted Cliffs are located on Maria Island on the East coast of Tasmania. Although you don't hear much about this attraction, it is a must to add to your itinerary.

These Cliffs are sandstone formed by the ocean and lined with rock pools and a kelp forest.

Make sure you time your visit for low tide and or sunrise/sunset for the best viewing.

It feels like something out of Harry Potter and almost too good to be true.

Maria Island was a last minute decision for us and turned out to an absolute ripper of a time.

We recommend spending at least a night there. You can bring your tent over and camp in the campsite or you can get a bunk bed for pretty cheap in the local penitentiary. Literary this island used to be a jail for convicts.

Make such you save this one for your travels!

Brilliant spot on Maria Island and very popular spot for tourists coming to the island. If you're only here on a day trip like most people, make sure you make the short journey here. It's well worth it. Getting down to the lower level will require some careful footwork. But it's all worth it in the end. Great spot!

Worth a visit. Climb up when you at the end of tge cliff. Use another walk to go back to the ferry point. You might find some wild wombat 5-10meters away from the main road.
