The Triabunna Barracks is a beautiful property restored to the highest standard and had the wow factor. Our room was just gorgeous and very comfortable. John and Kim are fantastic hosts and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Highly recommended.

Both my husband and I have travelled to many places in Europe, USA, Canada and all over Australia. I can say without any doubt that the Triabunna Barracks, rooms and surrounds were the best we have ever stayed at. The Barracks consist of three beautifully furnished and comfortable rooms. The hosts welcomed us warmly and provided a welcome drink and cheese platter on arrival. In addition, they provided some interesting history on the restoration of the Barracks, some convict history as well as things to do in the local area. I highly recommend staying here!!!

This was the most luxurious accommodation we stayed in on our travels around Tasmania. The room and facilities were cutting edge. Situated on the scenic east coast close to Maria Island - the perfect place to stay if planning to visit the island (which we did!). Our hosts John and Kim were exceptional. Breakfast included both continental and home cooked options. We had both and both were delicious. We particularly liked the home baked bread and poached fruits with homemade granola followed by delicious poached eggs, sautéed mushrooms, tasty tomatoes with bacon, sausage and beans. All ingredients sourced locally. Gluten free and vegan options also available. On arrival we enjoyed a cheese platter with home made relish and pinot noir to accompany it. All lovely. John and Kim were kind enough to invite us to a barbecue they were hosting on Sunday evening as most places were shut. They served freshly caught scallops and crayfish which John and his mate Nick had caught the day before. These were accompanied by a variety of homemade salads and bread - all magnificent! John also makes a great coffee with his special barista machine. We cannot thank our hosts enough for making our stay so wonderful. They also gave us great recommendations for places to visit and eateries. We just wish we had chosen to stay longer than 3 nights as there was so much to do and see in the area.

There was literally nothing less than perfect about our stay and our hosts, who were incredibly accommodating and unobtrusive. After two nights we left with a map detailed with highlights on the next segment of out trip.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the barracks. John & Kim have done an amazing job with the renovation. We love that everything in the building has been locally and sustainably sourced.

Our room was really well sized with a super comfy bed and a big free standing bath!

We were greeted with a platter and drinks on arrival. In the morning, they cooked up a feast of a breakfast for us. They were more than happy to cater for my partners gluten intolerance too!

Safe to say we will be back very soon.

Absolutely stunning accommodation and sensational hospitality. Excellent eco credentials on this relatively new renovation, and a real Grand Designs experience. Like other reviewers have said, we have never experienced bed and breakfast accommodation like it. It would be an amazing place to go with some other couples, as there are three fabulous rooms and a communal dining/lounge area, complete with a well-stocked bar and wine rack (it’s an honesty system and all very reasonable prices). Next door is a local pub with a fire, welcoming locals, and apparently great for a meal. We went with the fresh fish and chips from the van so we could make the most of the fire back at the Barracks. Will definitely be back to stay, including to see Maria Island which was shut for a few weeks when we were there.

One, if not the best Bed and Breakfast we have stayed in. A truly sympathetic heritage restoration with contemporary features and facilities. The hosts Kim and John go out of their way to ensure your stay with them is memorable. Will definitely be planning a second stay.

Our night at The Barracks was a special gift, and what a wonderful gift that turned out to be! From the moment we arrived Kim and John made us feel like honoured guests; welcome and totally at ease. The welcome drinks and platter of local treats, lovely conversation and delicious homecooked breakfast next morning all helped us relax and were greatly enjoyed and appreciated. The restoration of two old sandstone buildings with fascinating histories is worthy of Grand Designs or Restoration Australia, having been completed with skill, dedication and deep passion. The finished results are stunning, with special touches everywhere. The bed was heavenly and the bath totally luxurious.
We arrived tired and jaded on a wet and blustery day and left feeling refreshed and energised anew by our night of kind indulgence.
If you're ready for a treat I suggest you book now. And don't forget to ask John about the gin in the well - it's a fantastic tale!

My partner and I stayed here after a day out at Maria Island. If you want genuine sustainable tourism then this is where it's at. John and Kim have restored the old stables (mostly by hand) leaving you with beautiful, historical buildings crossed with seamless modern technology. The attention to detail is unmatched. Kim and John make the food and condiments themselves and the pub is just next door. We loved it here and would stay again! The hospitality is unmatched!

My partner and I stayed here in early August, John and Kim are so lovely and so passionate for their beautiful piece of restored colonial history. Beautiful breakfasts, great conversations. The area is ready to explore, wineries, convict history and a warm welcoming pub right next door. Highly recommended, try to fit in more than one night. Love Téa.

Lovely stay, building has been beautifully restored and exudes luxury and comfort through a combination of modern refurbishments whilst retaining its heritage elements. Kim spoilt us with a delicious pre-prepared home made breakfast and a cheese platter on our arrival. We will definitely be back when weather permits a visit to Maria Island.

After a day exploring the lovely heritage town of Oatlands and its surrounds, we decided to carry on to continue our appreciation at The Barracks in Triabunna.

Second time around and we are still in awe of this amazing restoration. Previously we stayed in the Loft. This time we were the Quarters and loved it too! Can't go past the gorgeous deep bath...it sure is a perfect way to relax.

If you appreciate sandstone houses, exposed ceiling beams, beautiful wood finishes and the charm of a bygone era respectfully re-imagined, then The Barracks is a must visit.

It is the ultimate showcase of a seamless blend of modern and heritage styling. The attention to detail - from the decor, right down to the nuts and bolts -  is a testament to John and Kim's commitment to this stunning project. We also loved that Indigenous Australian heritage is acknowledged and incorporated in this masterful creation.

There are still so many little details to take in that we missed in our first visit and John and Kim were gracious enough to share their time and stories about the construction journey. Be sure to peruse through the Triabunna Barracks storybook as you relax in the cosy nook.

This is our go to for a little luxury, and we intend to keep coming back. Thanks for hosting us again, and for the delicious breakfast. See you next time!

This was the best B&B that I have ever stayed in! John and Kim are amazing hosts, they are so welcoming and go over and above to ensure that you have everything that you need and are comfortable for your stay.
They have worked extremely hard to create a beautiful, clean and luxurious space for guests. All the little touches make such a difference, and there is nothing that they haven't thought of!

The town of Triabunna is small, but the location is perfect if you are going to Maria Island, as it is right next to the ferry stop. It it also a close drive from Freycinet National Park and Hobart.
Even if you aren't planning on doing anything in the area, it is worth coming to stay at the Triabunna Barracks just for the incredible experience!

I would love to go back again and would HIGHLY recommend it to anyone travelling the east coast of Tasmania as your first choice of accomodation!! If you can only chose one place to stay, this would be it!

Thank you John and Kim for your kindness and hospitality during my stay with you, you have done an amazing job and created a true "Grand Design" :)
