Shira Nui

The food here is excellent. Highly recommend sitting at the counter as they make and serve the omekase dishes. (Mostly Nigiri) Price is reasonable for omekase. If you want Japanese and good food (on par with the best and often more expensive omekase restaurants IMHO)with your date, this comes highly recommended.

I went there for lunch. Food and service were excellent.

The restaurant decor is not that modern and I feel more homey 😉.

Personally I would go back again as I really like the service and homey Japanese feeling.

Hands down one of the best omakase in Melbourne. They have been serving omakases since it even became fashionable in Australia. The food is delectable, the service as if you're in Japan, the attention to detail just spot on!

Had the sushi set lunch. With all of the side dishes it was very satisfying and delicious. All of the sushi is very fresh and flavourful. Even the ginger was amazing. I love fresh pickled ginger. All of the sushi melts in your mouth. Loved everything I had here and will return. Service is amazing and friendly as well!

Everything was so delicious, we ordered omakase menu for $120 each and a couple of dishes from the menu. Fresh ingredients with some new techniques applied, we were wowed by the deliciousness of the whole omakase menu. Make sure you make an early booking, I think this place close early and only have one sitting on weekends. Make sure to save room for dessert.

All time favourite authentic Japanese local gem in Glen Waverley. Been coming to Shira Nui for many years and the quality of food and service has been consistently amazing.

Lunch set meals are such great value at $35 - the chirashi is popular and a personal favourite. All the side dishes are so delicious, especially the chawanmushi.

Staff are very friendly and attentive. Lunch service on Saturdays runs at 12pm and 1pm sessions with an hour seating. Meals are served promptly so there is enough time to comfortably finish the meal without feeling rushed. Definitely more of a casual lunch rather than an intimate date.

I recently had the absolute pleasure of dining at Shira Nui for a special birthday lunch with my daughter, and I can confidently say this local gem in Glen Waverley deserves its stellar reputation. Located at 247 Springvale Rd, Glen Waverley, it may not boast flashy decor or modern fittings, but what it lacks in aesthetic flair, it more than makes up for in the quality and authenticity of its Japanese cuisine.

Walking into Shira Nui, you're greeted by a simple, slightly dated, Japanese ambience. Don't let this understatement deter you; the restaurant focuses squarely where it should be—on the food. The service was top-notch, and attentive without intrusive, making us feel welcomed and valued. It's also spotless, with tables being cleaned promptly as guests depart.

The restaurant is renowned for its oyster sushi, among other delectable offerings. Given its bustling atmosphere, especially during lunch, there's a sort of reassurance that the seafood you're consuming is as fresh as it gets, and I can attest to that. The omakase is not just a meal; it's an authentic experience, especially if you're fortunate enough to secure counter seating. Hiro, Melbourne's first qualified sushi chef, crafts each piece with a skill honed over two decades. His wife, Susi, complements his talents seamlessly, both of them being Glen Waverley staples for over 20 years.

While the drink and menu options might be somewhat limited, the quality of what's offered more than compensates. You're even welcome BYO wine, a nice touch that contributes to the overall value. Speaking of which, for the sheer quality and experience, Shira Nui offers the most budget-friendly omakase in Melbourne.

If you're contemplating a visit, my advice is this: book in advance and request a seat at the counter to witness the culinary ballet that is Hiro's sushi preparation. It may not be the 'modern fantasy Japanese' establishment that's all the rage these days, but sometimes tradition trumps trends, and quality speaks louder than aesthetics. A heartfelt thank you to Shira Nui for a memorable dining experience; it's evident that the passion for the craft is still very much alive after two decades.

Fantastic service and amazing food as always. Shira Nui has been a staple when it comes to authentic sushi and sashimi. Every single dine in experience we have had at this restaurant has been of high standard whether it is a nigiri set at lunch or an omakase for dinner.

This place is an absolute gem. For the money you can’t beat it. It’s fresh, unique and wide spread omakase is the best value and in Melbourne and my personal favourite. The chefs and staff are top notch and if this place was in the city it would be a hit with everyone! Hope to continue to return for years to come!

Highly recommend the omakase! All the fish and food was so fresh and delicious! Such a unique omakase where not all courses are fish but include oyster and meat. Love how you also get two pieces for each course 😋

Shira Nui is iconic. Very authentic experience and food from lunch to dinner. Lunch is great value or the omakase for something special. A firm local favourite for many years and the quality has been consistent every time.

Amazing flavours, freshest of ingredients. 9 varieties served (2 pieces per dish, per person) with a small glass of dessert to "rinse your pallet" at the end, at $120 per person. I'm a small eater, so it was a little too much for me. But those who can eat, you can still order (not included in the Omakase price) additional dessert. Decor is family dining kinda thing. Highly recommended if you want to experience Omakase dining - although this is not the fine dining kinda Omakase where they slice the fish in front of you, although there are some "assembly" and torching of the dishes they do in front of you if you are seated at the counter.

I ALWAYS love this restaurant. It is my mother's favourite place. We celebrate her birthday and all her special occasions here.

We love the staff, the manager Suzi and the chef Hiro. The wait staff are always so polite and cheerful.

The servings are always fresh and satisfyingly generous. The appetisers and accompanyments are tasty. The green tea has a delightfully fragrant and nutty rice quality that you don't get anywhere else.

Great quality Japanese food. Which I believe is quite authentically traditional.

Remember to book at least a week ahead for the set sessions, as the place is almost always fully booked.

Another lovely omakase experience. We went for a 6pm sitting. Staff are attentive and friendly. Bookings are a must. We highly recommend! We enjoyed the Shiromi (white fish) with lemon and salt so much we ordered an extra serve. We did not have enough room for dessert :(

The best Japanese food by Japanese chef in town I reckon. Food are super delicious, been visiting this place many times and never get disappointed. Clean environment, friendly staff. Affordable prices. Many choices of foods. Very busy, you need to book in advance.

Highly recommend this boutique sushi omekase restaurant. Very authentic experience, full of flavour and portion size was good. Service was great as well, and staff members were very understand when we were stuck in peak hour traffic and running late. Needless to say, I'll be back again.

My husband has been the biggest fan of Shira Nui for the longest time from when he used to live in Melbourne but this was my first time here. Had the premium Omakase and was blown away by the quality of the seafood. Incredible value for money. Great service. BYO wine allowed. It’s very old school - no online booking system so need to call to book. What a suburban gem!

We had Omakase (9 courses) for dinner, first thought was this is not going to be enough…. Haha actually it proved me wrong!!! Each person will have 2 sushi for each course, after 18 sushi I’m sure you will be satisfied - not just because the amazing food also the wonderful table service makes you enjoy the night without rushing.
