The Rooster Tree, Hume Highway

One of the natural wonders of Australia. Heading north on the Hume highway about 65km out of Melbourne in or around Broadford/Sunday Creek, you will see a lone rooster perched upon a hill. The rooster, is actually made up of 2 lone trees that sit atop that hill. Over the years the form of the rooster has certainly changed at times but for at least 2 decades the rooster tree has been a clear landmark for many travellers heading towards Sydney from Melbourne, evidence of this is the fact that this natural phenomena has its own Facebook group dedicated to it and has been the subject of at least 2 songs that I know of. The fact it has survived lightning strikes, brutal storms and even a few bushfires, one in particular that scorched black all the farmland around it. The flames got within 100 ± metres of the trees. Anyway, the rooster tree is iconic and should be protected for the enjoyment of future generations of Aussies playing I spy in the backseat of their parents car as they head out of Melbourne on holidays.

About as good as Australia gets. Get in early to beat the crowds in the high season though.

Over many years heading up the Hume when the kid's were little, we would have a competition who could spot the Rooster first.... Or friends we were visiting would call and ask how far away we were, we would say 'at the Rooster', and they always knew where we were. I had no idea it was so well known.
