Risbys Ridge Forest Refuge

This forest refuge provides the last surviving old growth link between the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area at Risbys Plains and the Carpenters and Gold Creek valleys below. It features an enchanting, dark, mossy forest floor beneath towering tree ferns, sassafrass, myrtle and giant swamp gums. Clearfell logging to the north and a large quarry to the south make this a vital refuge for Tasmania’s many endangered animals and birds such as the masked owl, wedge tailed eagle and Tasmanian devil. A short walking loop through the heart of this forest can be found at the end of a new road which climbs the ridge just south of the quarry. Park your car near the quarry to enjoy the mountain views as you walk up the road or drive on up if steep hill walking is not your thing! A great spot to visit only 10 minutes from Maydena or, if you have more time, when driving to or from the Giant Tree Reserve further up Styx Road.

What a place to start your Styx Valley big tree journey! - Road up is very steep so maybe park above quarry. 3 Giant trees over 5m wide 2 up at the top and one just beside Styx rd hiding in plan sight down below. Love it!
