Fannys Bay Whisky Distillery Reviews

Lovely small batch distillery in a gorgeous location. The tour and tasting was great, the whiskies are amazing. As a non-whisky drinker (I was there in support of my partner), I appreciated that it was not pretentious. No pressure to buy a bottle but you'll definitely want to take one home.

Wow what an experience... I met with Mathew & Julie Cooper at their distillery and had the pleasure of a one on one chat with both of them and got a great understanding of their distilling process.
Also a tasting.
The whisky's they produce are in my opinion up there with the best in Australia and should be a sought after item for any collection.
Fanny's Bay Is an epic location...

A really unique and totally unpretentious whiskey tour and tasting. Mathew and Julie are fantastic hosts and are an absolute wealth of knowledge. It was lovely to hear the backstory of the name and the journey to get where they are today. While neither me or my partner are whiskey connoisseurs, we greatly enjoyed the experience and would recommend a visit to anyone even vaguely interested in whiskey. Wonderful to see a couple doing something together they find fun, in a tiny coastal town, producing a world class product. Don’t miss a visit if you find yourself in Lulworth!

This is an awesome little distillery run by Matthew and Julie. We were given the full tour and experience for our small group of three people. The tour includes an up close walk through all the equipment allowing you to see and smell the product at the different stages. With more than one sample and all the knowledge they shared, the $10 fee for the tour is definitely worth it! Absolutely drop in when you are next driving along the North East Coast of Tasmania!

Mathew and Julie craft an exceptional Dram on the coast. The tour may take some folks just a few minutes, as one is only moving a few meters inside a modest sized shed, but for us it took over an hour. They are superb hosts both engaging and eager to share in the production process. I met them 2 years ago in Hobart at a tasting, and was quite intrigued about his whiskey crafting philosophy. And impressed with the quality of product. And we had many questions.
Finally, the tasting notes: Portions are quite generous, and my favourite three of six trialled were also appreciated by my wife. We were not rushed through the tasting at all, and clearly Mathew and Julie appreciate folks who appreciate their hard earned results. As I do not want to interfere with your tasting process or outcome, I won't say which one my better half chose. But I will say that next time I will procure the "slightly peated Shiraz" which is a newer offering and quite compelling.
In my experience the last two years, this is one of the best drams of the Tasmanian whisky distillery revolution. I have sampled 25-30 of the different distilleries here in Tas, and most highly recommend the tour and the Spirit. In Good Health!

My friend, Hayden, and I had the pleasure of stopping by Fannys Bay Distillery on Tuesday the 12th of January. Being pleasantly met by Julie, she gave us the background of Mathew’s retirement project and how it’s sprung to light.
While their set up is smaller than other local distillery’s, don’t judge a book by its cover! What these two wonderful people are producing is nothing short of amazing.
Playing designated driver, I was limited in my tastings. But being a peated whisky fan, I was very happy with their lightly peated Shiraz (63.4% abv). Julie and Mathew are very generous with their tastings, having their full range ready for you to try! We were also lucky enough to have a very limited tasting from a couple of their barrels that are almost ready to be bottled and released.
Mathew’s knowledge in the industry means for very interesting conversations and he’ll answer any question you chuck at him. Both Julie and Mathew are very hospitable and make you feel very welcome there. We did not ever feel like we were being ‘rushed out’ or sped through the process.
We were enlightened on a couple of Mathew’s project whiskies while progressing on the tour. Ones we hope for his sake they take off well!
We cannot thank both Julie and Mathew enough for their time and generous hospitality. With this being my first official whisky tour, I’m so glad I did it with Fannys Bay Distillery! 🥃

The best distillery tour I have done by far! I love whiskey and my husband and I have done several distillery tours before but we have never learned as much or had things explained so clearly as Fanny's bay. Very friendly and generous hosts, thanks so much!

Fannys Bay distillery in beautiful Tam O'Shanter Tasmania .
With the fantastic hand crafted whisky's tasting a treat, with their Port, Sherry, Bourbon and Pinot matured whiskys you could not ask for much more, but then you have Mathew & Julie Cooper as distillers and hosts, with the lovely Irene ready to help you out. It's a great spot to visit and try a wee whisky or two.
