MR. RYU SOUTH YARRA

An impromptu decision to have sushi for dinner struck this evening and I must say, very pleased with where we ended up.
A very calm and serene atmosphere greeted us upon arrival with the friendly hostess seating us promptly.
Starting off with drinks, a Japanese Long Island Ice Tea and the Passionfruit Mojito (w rum) (my favourite of the night!) followed by some very delicious food. Highly recommend getting the Spicy edamame!
Everything was very enjoyable, from the Kingfish with Coconut cream sashimi to the Salmon tacos and the Spicy Prawn Sushi.
Nothing was left on our plates by the end of it, not even the ginger!
If you find yourself in Toorak, this is one piece you definitely want to visit!

I don't usually have high expectations for modern/fusion Japanese food but was amazed by everything we are at Mr Ryu! There are plenty of vegan options too which is a huge plus. The only little issue we had was that we were overcharged a few dollars for a drink (whisky sour at happy hour was charged $22, but it's $19 regular price on the drinks menu). We'll definitely return and try more dishes next time.

Small Japanese restaurant with bar seating downstairs and table service upstairs. Because the space is small, the wood decor made it feel homey and intimate. We ordered a number of dishes and most of them are great. Would definitely recommend the fried chicken and the soba salad. Service was lovely and fairly quick as well.

Pros: The food is some of the tastiest I've ever enjoyed (the Kingfish tacos and Ramen Gnocchi particularly); the tap beer is cold and served big 🍻; and the happy and accommodating service puts you at ease👌
Cons: It's only fault is the small inside seating arrangement and lack of any outdoor dining options

The sashimi trio was some of the freshest I've had in Melbourne.

The gnocchi was such a unique dish, and absolutely delicious!

The gyoza and the fried chicken were classic dishes that were beautifully presented and made.

The agedashi tofu didn't taste like the usual, but was still so so good - smoky (somehow?!), and soft and crispy at the same time.

Will definitely be going back to try other dishes!

Stumbled across and decided to try it out. Pleasantly surprised as everything we ordered was delicious. The sake drinks were also amazing! Also had outdoor seating and pet friendly.

I’d heard great things about Mr Ryu, and so I decided to bring my family who were visiting interstate here.

Best decision. The food was like a work of art, looked amazing and tasted amazing as well. I can’t stress how incredibly friendly and supportive the staff were, brilliant service.

Thanks for a great night Mr Ryu, and thanks for being a great introduction to Melbourne for my family.

The food is absolutely delicious. I haven’t tried everything…. Because I can’t go past my favourites, spicy tuna taco, truffle agedashi tofu, coconut kingfish sashimi, ramen gnocchi, crispy eggplant. If you try any of these you won’t be disappointed.

Both the gyoza and fried chicken, classic dishes, were not only beautifully presented but also exceptionally well-made.

The agedashi tofu had a distinct and delightful twist; it had a smoky flavor and a perfect balance of softness and crispiness.

I can't wait to return and explore more of their menu!

This was the best Japanese restaurant I’ve ever been to! The food was amazing and really great staff. If you want to have an incredible food paired with splendid service, I recommend Mr Ryu!

Came here last night for my husband's birthday dinner. We achieved a level of unadulterated piggery I didn't think was possible. The food was unbelievably good.
Mouth-gasms galore- the kingfish sashimi was truly heavenly- I can't stop thinking about it. Ramen gnocchi highly addictive, tempura chicken unbelievable. Miso soup was comforting & silky with just the right amount of saltiness. My hubby wont stop talking about the pork. Best prawn gyoza we've ever had. Realised we may have a problem with saki ❤. Our waiter was FIRST class, could not have asked for better.

This is a nice and comfy Japanese place in South Yarra. The staff is nice, they have great food options and a Happy Hour from 5:00 pm!

Had a fantastic experience here tonight.. a super friendly and accommodating lady served us and made sure we were well taken care of! The sashimi trio, chicken teriyaki and steamed pork gyoza was absolutely fabulous!! Also enjoyed the sake flight and a peaceful ambiance! Wish we had found this gem of a place at the beginning of our trip here to Melbourne! Best meal we’ve had in the city and highly recommend! Would give them more stars if I could!
