Wide variety of sushi train/boat dishes at $3.80 each, but they are made equally delicately. I particularly liked the hot dishes. Very enjoyable selection and experience. Staff are friendly and welcoming.

Sushi coming around in little boats?... it is as adorable as it sounds.

Sushi Boto has the x-factor with the boats and will no doubt bring in curious eaters, but does it have the staying power to keep afloat?

Recently opened in St Collins Lane, I was invited to try some key dishes there. There a lot of positives about this place. Having a single price for all the sushi on the boats/train makes it a much more pleasant experience than having to figure out if a dish is premium, or cheap. It means you can just choose the dishes you want, and to be honest I probably end up spending more because I’m having more fun!

The quality and innovation of some of the sushi train dishes coming around was great – there wasn’t a weak dish that we chose. As an experienced sushi train eater, I am gravitated towards value, freshness and things I wouldn’t normally try. Fresh, clean, fun I enjoyed all of it.

The décor is a lot of fun, it’s excess but they have fun doing so. If it’s the flowers, the boats, the lucky cats, the table decorations, the sushi steps, the arcade games. I love the colour scheme, it very whimsical.

If sushi boats aren’t your thing (not sure why this would be a scenario), there are al la carte options, as well as takeaway options for the work crowd. This place is being anything and everything you want to be.

For the high end eater, you can try the sushi step which is a 10 course degustation served on this elaborate wooden plank which progressively gets more interesting from scampi to fois gras. It was definitely a memorable experience and felt very gourmet.

Sushi Boto is a much needed attraction to St Collins Lane, and is a standout in sushi train-type experiences in Melbourne CBD. I’ll definitely be back for the Sushi Boats.

We went today for our Sushi Train fix and tried Sushi Boto for the first time.

It was a good value for the price and great quality (and we tried nearly every sushi train in Melbourne). The super welcoming staff prepared our ordered items fast and we were positively surprised. We will for sure be back, especially for the fried cheese avocado :)

5 stars is for lunch

Dinner is 4 stars.

Difference is the conveyer belt options are lacking at dinner time, though they offer to make $3.80 dishes at request, fresh. They have a small a la carte option of chirashi, dry aged dons and sushi/sashimi collections ($88 for 10 types) for dinner instead.

The quality of sashimi is exceedingly fresh and certainly above airport/ average shopping centre quality.

Nobody goes to a sushi train shop expecting excellent service but my waitress was very attentive. At the end, they offer a small token to play on the claw machine, though it may be just for dinner patrons.

Portions are small (3 pieces of kingfish for $3.80) so be prepared to pay up if you're starving.

We visited for dinner shortly after they'd just opened and it was a lovely experience. Food options are plenty and yummy, the boats are so cute (a magical way to receive your food), the staff were super and it's really affordable. You even get a little coin at the end of your meal to use in the mini arcade so you take home a novelty gift.

Food was fantastic. We came about 5pm and so everything was made fresh. I like the concept of the boats as something different opposed to the train. Its hard to find good sushi train places and this is one of the better ones.

Sushi Boto located in St Collins Lane food hall is one of the most innovative sushi restaurants I’ve seen! Instead of the usual sushi train, they have specially made sushi boats and the sushi floats on them in water. It’s so creative, I have never seen this before not even in Japan or Hong Kong. The sushi boats can be a little slow, so they have another regular conveyer belt of sushi next to the boats so don’t worry you won’t be hungry there will always be sushi available.

For $3.80 a plate you have a large variety of sushi and sashimi to choose from - California roll, cooked tuna, raw salmon and plates of sashimi. Which is pretty good value because all plates are the same price.

Something else worth mentioning about is the sushi step! I mean let’s face it, the sushi and sashimi boats we re use to seeing is a little boring and out dated. The $88 sushi step is definitely a “step up” 🤣 pun intended!

Overall, had a great time and already want to revisit with my boyfriend for a quick meal before going to the movies or something!
