Kate Rakyat Bar opened two weeks ago. We discovered it by walking past. We were hesitant to go in because it was completely empty, however I am glad we risked it. The place is obviously family owned and run, the service was nice and the lady was very friendly and helped explain the menu (which needs a bit of work). We got some Roti, a Chicken Curry Laksa and Pataya. Everything was full of flavour and really yummy. Would definitely come back.

Really want to support this joint as a fellow Malaysian but the flavours were not on point. Lots of room for improvement

It's a nice feeling restaurant and decently priced but food was disappointing and bland. The chicken laksa had no herbs, vegies or tofu at all, only hokkien noodles (no vermicelli) and was served with some bean sprouts and a very, very small slice of lime. Chicken was also dry, not shredded and flavourful as expected. The other dishes we got were similarly lacking in terms of flavour and ingredients, with only five small pieces of chicken found in the chicken rice dish. As there are many delicious options at a similar price point on Victoria st, I am unlikely to return. Sorry.

So... Where do I begin??? Foodies beware! We should've known, when the outgoing customers wished us luck! When we arrived, the waitress was very persistent we take a seat, even though we advised her we were only ordering a takeaway. We eventually sat & she gave us 1 menu for the 3 of us to look at. The menu was only the lunch specials - so 5 dishes to choose from. We ordered 2x laksas (1x mild; 1x normal) & 1x Nasi Lemak- easy right??? & yes this is what she wrote down... 40MINS LATER in an empty restaurant... She comes out with 2 containers but the waitress insists there are 3 meals so I opened the bag. The Nasi Lemak was cold to touch & there was 1 odd colour "laksa liquid" . When we queried her, the male waiter came out with the noodles, bean sprouts & "seafood" for the laksa. So she was prepared for us to leave with 1 meal & a "laksa liquid" - we still left with 2 meals between 3 of us because who has time on their lunch break to wait another 40mins! Eating of the food was just as bland & empty as the restaurant & ambience... We had to reheat the food. The "laska" was a watered down tasteless liquid with tough "seafood", 1 prawn - that we were all too scared of to eat. The Nasi Lemak was uncooked but the rice was edible... Needless to say the whole experience was well BELOW one star & we are scared of the after effects...

Nasi lemak was reheated in a microwave. Many dishes on the menu were not available. They didn't have calamari or scallops for the seafood char kuey teow, so we only had 2 prawns and some fish balls and fish cakes. Cash only as they didn't have a machine- this was not advised from the start
