Plenty of historic huts depicting yesterday year and what gold prospectors endured. Leonora Shire has done great work in preserving these huts and relocating period shops from Leonora to the Ghost Town for this was once a bustling gold village.
Well worth stopping at Hoover House RV Free Camp that overlooks the Ghost Town and St Barbara Gold Mine Site.
Can recommend walk to Hoover House for excellent Coffee n Scones. Mine was engineered during its initial constuction and development by Herbert Hoover who later went on to become the President of the United States. He also designed and built Hoover House which is now a B&B.
The State Hotel built by government to manage alcohol in the gold rush period is now owned by the Mining Company but remains closed.

The ghost town of Gwalia is well worth the visit as is the museum that has an interesting insight into the previously vibrant town. The old managers house has been converted into a B&B and coffe shop. We had a Devonshire tea that was as good as we have had anywhere.

A definite must see. You can do a self exploratory tour of the ghost town itself. Just open a door and see how the miners use to live. You must visit the museum as well. Free camping and must be fully self contained at the museum overlooking the mine site.

A very special place not to be missed if you are in the area. Fantastically restored old miners huts with all sorts of memorabillia. Up the Hill is Hoover House and the Gwalia Museum (and a great cafe) don't miss those either!

Ghost town it is. Preservation of the past settlers homes is an eye opener to how they lived. Vast collection of old machinery, household items and information on history of the time the town was thriving. The open pit mine is still operating and you can view it from two platforms.

Gwalia and the Hoover house nearby are a fascinating destination in WA's Golden Outback. Certainly a highlight of my visit to the Shire of Leonora. From the rich mining history to the abandoned buildings or the accommodation at Hoover house which was designed by the future 35th President of the USofA. Well worth spending a day or two having a look around here and the photography opportunities kept me going for hours.

This interesting mining town has been a standout on my to-do list and it exceeded expectations!
The entire town has been abandoned and looked after over the years allowing tourists to walk through the neighbourhood and inside the buildings.
Eye opening to see how certain elements of mining villages are still very apparant these days.
This is a must see in WA!

Being able to wander through the various tin clad houses of the past was a real privilege. Would recommend for anyone who wants to enjoy a real step back in time experience.
Well done by the volunteers who put in a lot of hard work into the houses

Interesting. What a life of living in such a small cottage during 1900s.

This place is well worth visiting.
The houses have been restored and contain some of the old furniture.
The nearby museum tell the stories of some of the many people who lived and worked (and died) in the mine and contributed to the development of the area.

Great piece of history preserved. Pretty striking to see the living conditions of the early diggers out at Leonora.
Open to the public with interesting information placards located at convenient spots.

Recommended by a friend to visit, I was sceptical at first, but honestly I enjoyed it. Lots of historic buildings, open to walk through and explore. Easy to park wherever and lots of information and detail. Definitely worth a visit is passing Leonora. Recommend visiting the Gwalia Museum first. Toilets nearby.

I wasn't sure whether it was worth coming through here. But make it part of your trip. You actually get to have a look inside the houses. Also the museum and Hoover house was great. Make sure you have a scone and tea looking over the beautiful garden and for something different a mine pit.

Have visited Gwalia Town many times in the last 20 years and stayed at Hoover House 4 times in all the bedrooms. Pleased to see every time I visited Gwalia I see improvements in all areas of the museum which sits well with my beliefs about mining in WA and may it continue into the future.
