Great wetlands with boardwalk to take you through reed beds. There is also a bird hide along the way. We saw swamp harriers along with shorebirds, egrets, ducks etc. There is not much shade so make sure to put on sunscreen.
The boardwalk is accessible outside of the hours on google and you can put a donation instead.
I was also very impressed by the brochures available with a checklist of birds seen here - great for non-birders or children to tick off the species they see!

We drove past here each day during our stay in Rosevears and made a point of checking it out. Ignore what Google says about closing time because that’s only applicable to the shop/info centre which closes at 4pm. We were still able to leave $ in a slot provided in the wall. Easy parking. The walk was much longer than we expected which we were happy with. Very peaceful. A good variety of birds to be seen. Beautiful views of the surrounding hills. Toilets were located at the far end of the walk and I was pleasantly surprised to see a picnic and BBQ area there also. Well worth stopping for 💕

This afternoon, my parents and I visited the Tamar Island Wetlands Reserve in Riverside, Tasmania. This walk was on my "to-do" list before we started on this trip to Tasmania. Despite the weather being sunny 22 degrees, there was only light winds and it felt much warmer than that.

Located off the West Tamar Highway before you reach Launceston, this wetlands reserve is a very popular scenic spot.

There is an Information Centre about 100m from the entrance carpark. Normally it's open from 9:30am to 4:30pm but today it was closed. Still you're able to access and walk through the wetlands. They do ask to provide a $3 donation if you're able to.

The walking track through the wetlands reserve is predominantly boardwalk sections with chicken wire mesh on top plus several bridge crossings connecting each of the small islands. There are also a few timber seats along the way if you need to rest and/or enjoy the scenery.

It's a very vast reserve over the Tamar River with lots of marshy areas, tall reeds and grass and a wide variety of different birdlife including Black Swans, Chestnut Teals (Ducks), Great Egrets, White Faced Herons, Australisian Swamp Hens, Eurasian Coots and more.

Before the first bridge crossing, there is a short walking track which leads you to a bird hide where you can do some bird watching across the lagoon.

Eventually you'll reach Tamar Island itself when the path turns into a gravel/dirt track and splits into a loop. There are public toilets here as well as a picnic table and BBQ area.

Overall, despite this being one of the more "touristy" wetlands reserves I've visited, it is a still very beautiful and impressive area to walk around.

Well worth a visit! Plenty of parking. Easy walking tracks, spectacular scenery and abundant wildlife. The visitors centre has very knowlegable volunteers who can tell you all about the plants, animals and birds you can see. Tamar Island Wetlands are a calming oasis of natural beauty so close to Lanceston.

Very nice place. We went in a freak weather with lots of gust but many birds were still here. Good place to take portraits and bird photos.

I didn’t notice any donation per entry when we entered.

This is such a peaceful place, so close to the city of Launceston. So many changes in landscape along the way. Take some food with you and sit at the end and enjoy the birds.

Easy walk, all boarded. $3 donation per person to enter, lots of birds and open no matter the weather. Not many undercover areas so be sure to check the weather. Lots of parking. Bring binoculars! These birds are out in the wild and not likely to get super close.

Free access with a small car parking area but donations welcome. The boardwalk is easy and accessible. Unfortunately the weather was very bad so we didn't do the full walk. Visited in spring so lots of birds with babies on the water. Really enjoyed the hide out for watching birds. The information centre had some interesting displays and items for purchase such as books and postcards.
I would recommend binoculars if you have them and heed the warnings about snakes.
Will definitely return if I visit Tasmania again.

Excellent, well maintained, easy walking path. Plenty of bird life along the way. Donation entry makes it an accessible family activity. Maps and bird spotting fact sheets available at the entrance. And toilets available by the BBQ area on Tamar Island.

Awesome walk! Lots of birds to see, walk is 1.5km one way, 3 bridges to walk across to main island where u can have a BBQ or picnic! Watch out for snakes as we saw one on our walk near walkway, it hi-tailed back into the scrub! Totally good walk!

What an absolutely amazing walk. All flat and one level boardwalk, so easy to walk. A one hour round trip back to the car park. So beautiful and peaceful that you cannot hear any traffic, just the wind rustling in the tall reeds and bird life. Would recommend to anyone coming to Launceston.

The information centre was lovely and the staff very friendly and informative. The walk is about 1.5km each way but worth the visit. We had a lovely winter's day. Saw loads of birds and you can even have a BBQ on Tamar Island. There are also toilets on the Island.
