Nyala African Restaurant

Death, taxes and enjoying your dinner at Nyala are the only certainties in life. I moved away from Melbourne for 5 years and came here on my first night back. Nothing had changed and the food was still 10/10. This is one of Fitzroy's best kept secrets.

Lovely restaurant with some authentic African dishes. Definitely recommend St Georges, the Ethiopian beer. We tried pretty much all the non vegetarian options and really loved the Beef and Chicken dishes. The Injera and mountain breads are great for the dips too.

Terrific food, but they really need an air conditioner in the dining area for hot days. The room is well ventilated from the windows, but it was very hot when we went there on a day where it was above 30 in the evening. I'm sure it would be fine on a cooler day.

My partner and I went here for a Valentines dinner, we booked the day before Valentines day as we couldn't make the day together, i made a note with the booking and asked if they could set something romantic up for us, i didn't expect it, but they pulled out all the stops for us!
Absolutely amazing food, I’d never tried Ethiopian food before and the flavours where magical! Service was great and they really went above and beyond to make sure we had a romantic time! 10/10 by all accounts! I would eat here again for sure!

Ethiopian food was yummy!! Presentation could have been better tho, as the bread was put into baskets inside of being spread out on plates for presentation. Got the banquet, it was decent.

Delicious food and super friendly service! Prices are great and the portions very generous. Would highly recommend any of the vege dishes, especially the lentils! Yum!

A must visit in Fitzroy, located in one of the best spots on Brunswick Street, all the people working are lovely and attentive. Lots of vegan options and everything is made in-house, best injera I’ve ever had. They do byo and have one of the cheapest wine lists in Fitzroy. Highly recommend.

Numerous and delicious vegetarian options. The injera was also great. Lovely music and ambience, and friendly service as well.

Very beautiful decor and atmosphere, very high attention to detail throughout the restaurant. We ordered the banquet for $40 and there was a wide variety and high quantity of food given, very worth the price. The waiter misheard a small detail of our order and compensated with an entire main meal which was completely unexpected but wholly appreciated, and indicative of the 5 star customer service. The milk tart was also very delicious and highly recommended! Hope to try the coffee next time, would come here again.

Wow I have no words… I absolutely loved this place! My family and I went here for dinner and we were not disappointed. We ordered the chicken curry, the beef stew, the sizzling lamb and the vegan combo. Everything was full of flavour and had great portion sizes. The service was so lovely and the atmosphere was amazing. We will definitely be returning here soon!

Delicious food, good value, heaps of fun. The waiter took great care of us and it was the perfect way to kick off our Saturday night. We tried everything on the menu with a big group, plenty of vegetarian and meat options. There were even gluten free alternatives for breads, we just asked the waiter and they arranged it all for us. We finished the night with shots and the banana desert, I recommend both.

I had never eaten Ethiopian food before. My son recommended this place and it was sensational. Live music too. The beef stew was delicious. It all was. The honey wine had a beautiful taste and even better after-taste. Delightful. Will be back.

Great African restaurant with a nice decoration and tasty dishes. If you like spicy foods, you should definitely come here.

Beautiful resturant, amazing food and lovely staff

Amazing experience, got food from different African countries. Got the banquet for $30 odd dollars. 3 course meal. Generous portion so come with an empty stomach. Food was delicious. Service is excellent. Lady who I think is the owner did well.
