Athenaeum Theatre

Lovely old theatre. Comfortable seating. You can purchase snacks, soft & alcoholic drinks & souvenirs.
My only complaint is lack of female toilets. The queues are so long before, at intermission & after the show.
However, I still love the atmosphere & decor of this beautiful old theatre.

What a beautiful theatre in the heart of Melbourne. Full of character, charm and still maintained to be one of the best places to out on a show within the CBD. I loved getting to visit to see the Rocky Horror Picture Show in February 2024 as it was fully decked out with cute photo spots and sets ups within to really make the night.

The staff were lovely and the refreshments were very nice, a lot of similarities to movie type food and drinks including choc tops. Check out the gorgeous stairway in the foyer which is very glamorous for photos before the show! When you do head in the aisles are tight with little leg room but the view from most seats not under the balcony is clear and unobstructed. I suggest booking closer to the front if you want the ultimate viewing experience.

Overall it’s a great venue and any show you see here hopefully reflects that. Get out and support the theatre scene in Melbourne.

Saw Rocky Horror Show in February 2024. The seating was great. Not too close or too far away. Easy access to toilets and refreshments. The atmosphere was amazing.

Omg what a fantastic venue! We saw Diesel in the intimate setting of 300 or so people. Awesome acoustics and atmosphere. Love!

A lovely theatre with an old world atmosphere. Would be wonderful if they could get funding to refurbish like the other larger theatres in Melbourne. It’s important to preserve this smaller iconic building too.

It is a fantastic theatre with beautiful details in the architecture.
Additionally, in the dress circle, they had enough of a slant in the seats which resulted in being able to see everything on the stage which I appreciated.

A wonderful theatre experience! The Rocky Horror Picture Show was a fun outing with an excellent atmosphere, stage set and production! The staff were helpful, the bar was stocked with drinks and snacks and the photo opportunities helped make for a wonderful night!

One would expect the cast on opening night to have a bit of jitters ...but no . It was a joy to watch the whole cast, extremely talented,obvoiusly well rehearsed , relaxed and having fun with it.
Jason Donovan is phenomenal as the star of the show.He displayed an abundance of comedic talent,
and having seniority over the rest of the cast, the power dynamic
between frank N furter and his minions translated well.
Joel creasey made the narrator role his own and was unshakeable when faced with hecklers.
Fantastic show , an unforgettable and enjoyable night was had by all.

Five of us attended a child’s stage production and one of us was wheelchair bound. The staff were spectacular in their service. The theatre so impressed my five year old grand niece that she wants to grow up and work in the Atheneum. A noble career. Thank you for the memories.

Went to see Rocky Horror Show which was a great performance on its own. The theatre is very cosy but well maintained, with good acoustics and decent facilities. The staff are very helpful and friendly . The bar prices are decent . Overall great venue , I recommend 100%!

Beautiful older style theatre. Saw Elvis and loved it. Personally i thought the show could've shown a bit more of story with Cilla & Lisa -Marie & a bit less on other aspects. Unlike Sydney shows, served glass which you can take into theatre at intermission, how civilized! 👍 would recommend.

We went to see Alice in wonderland performed. Seamless process to be seated. We had great seats in the dress circle but anywhere would still have provided fantastic viewing. Charming old theatre. Only complaint was there isn't much leg room.

Absolutely stunning location! No matter what show you see here, half of the experience is the theatre itself! Such a beautiful building, lovely architecture and atmosphere.

Athenaeum Threatre is a wonderful place to go to fora awesome show. The staff are amazing & very friendly. Thank you to all the staff at the Athenaeum Theatre. And the show I saw there was absolutely brilliant.

Cute old theatre that we saw a daytime kids performance. The sound system was good, seats comfortable and staff helpful. The toilets smelt pretty rank for 11am on a Saturday.

Went to the Athenaeum theatre to see a wonderful production of the Rocky Horror Show. A wonderful, talented cast and crew. Jason Donovan put in a fantastic performance as Frankenfurter. Highly recommend you see this production before it leaves Melbourne.

Came here to catch the Candlelight Concert and would recommend it to anyone. Been to 3 already. But regards to the Athenaeum, amazing venue, we sat up to row M and still had an amazing view. My only criticism is the prices for drinks at the bar can be ridiculous; $14 for cider is insanely expensive.
