La Trobe Swing Bridge

No tickets required. An old swing bridge (rotating) where the La Trobe and Thompson rivers meet, and near the Sale Common nature reserve. Very pleasant place for a picnic or a walk, or just to see the old bridge and take pictures.

Good to see this historic bridge restored so well.

This bridge is one of the oldest surviving swing bridges in Australia, being constructed between 1880-1883, and is regarded as one of the engineering wonders of Gippsland, being able to swing through 360 degrees.
It has been well restored to its original state and has many information signs around it. A very scenic place.

A peice of history thats still standing, its cool to look at and understand why how when.

Beautiful bridge and always amazing the longevity of these things and the expertise. At the moment, no picnic spot. Need a boat for the Carpark and picnic tables.

It was a very good experience. I highly recommend it because I think it's the only Swing Bridge in Southern hemisphere. Important historical landmark.

Beautiful little resting stop for a picnic lunch arrive at the right time to watch the bridge swing open, or just to kick back and enjoy the surroundings

Great day for a ride. Plenty of water in the system but no flooding issues. Great track to ride on,... what's not to like?

An engineering masterpiece from the Victorian era. A one man or woman job to swing the bridge when a vessel needed to pass by. At the confluence of the LaTrobe and Thompson rivers.

Nice views and some walking tracks. We were lucky enough to see a boat travelling along the river 😃
Just be aware that once the sun starts to go down a lot of mosquitoes appear.

A great example of engineering skill. Bridge opens on Saturday at mid-day.

One of the coolest bridges ever! I even got to meet the great-granddaughter of one of the bridge-keepers! Definitely something to have a look at!
