We LOVED this b&b place, and MANY thanks to our host couple Barry and Denielle for being so kind and warm welcoming.
On a rainy day we drove pass Crookwell on a road trip, and we were very lucky to be taken very good care of by this warm hearted couple who retired from Sydney. They not only prepared us clean and cozy room (with a very fair price), but also drove us to a local pub with great seafood for dinner. We also made new friends with people staying at the inn, who are nice people with interesting life stories. We really enjoyed the feeling of chatting by the fire place in such a cold rainy day, with a cute dog (patches) lying by the foot ♥
Also Barry is very knowledgeable of the area and recommended us good local bakery and visiting information for the next day.
All in all we couldn't be more grateful to have found this little inn and encountered those good people passing on local kindness and hospitality.

I stayed in the “Dolphin Room”. It was very comfortable indeed. The bed was great, the ensuite modern and very clean. Mr and Mrs Murphy were great hosts and made me feel very welcome. Fantastic value for money, too. It exceeded my expectations and I wll definitely stay there again and recommend it to my friends, family and colleagues.

My father in law stayed here on many occasions over the past 2 years.
Barry and his wife were fantastic hosts. Made me feel very comfortable a home away from home. The rooms were always service. If you want to learn some real history Spud is happy to share a story or two. Real country feel and would happily stay again ....Grant

Comfortable, cosy rooms at a very reasonable price. Barry gave us a very warm welcome and even waited up late to make sure we got settled in our rooms without any problems. The beds had electric blankets and lots of layers to keep us toasty warm. Showers had great pressure and steaming hot water, and I liked that the shower head was high enough for me to stand under - I’m 5’10” so often have to crouch to wash my hair when I stay in a B&B or motel.

It’s a beautiful heritage style accommodation with vintage furnishings that make you feel like you’ve stepped back in time. Barry was like a kindly grandfather to us and we were very upset to hear other visitors had previously taken advantage his caring, generous nature. It’s sad that people can treat someone’s home so disrespectfully and be so dishonest. We hope other visitors will be more considerate and honest. It may not the fanciest place to stay, but you can’t beat it for country hospitality.

One of the best hotels in Australia, nothing like it, every room has a different theme, theirs the dolphin room with dolphins everywhere and a dolphin bed head, you have the V8 room, just to name a few. Spud will go out of his way to get anything done for you, one of the most genuine blokes you'll meet.

He's happy to work out deals for extended accommodation and if any issue comes up he'll sort it, if not you'll get a discount.

Friday nights he'll drive you in the bus to a local pub in Grabben Gullen which has fresh seafood would you believe.

Don't expect a 5 star hotel but you will get 5 star service.

We have been staying at Spud Murphy's Inn whenever we visit Crookwell for the past twelve years (several times a year). I am surprised by Jennifer Morgan's negative comment and the occasional others. This has not been our experience! We have always found the bed linen clean, the matresses very comfortable with electric blankets and plenty of warm lays to suit the highland climate. The showers are fantastic, hot with plenty of pressure. Spud Murpy's Inn is a heritage building that has been an inn/hotel since 1870's and so is a real country town experience. Barry and Denielle are great hosts, very generous and hospitable. The many 5 star ratings they have received are well deserved. The Inn is definitely budget accommodation but the linen and rooms are clean.

We stayed here 3/11/17 and had a great night. Great shower, clean sheets and friendly hosts. This place is piece of Australian history and you are missing out on a unique experience if you don't stay here. For the money it is great value. Just expect it to be what it is, an old fashioned country inn.

It was obvious from our first call to Grabben Gully pub that things happened differently around Crookwell.
‘Sorry, we don’t have any accommodation, but we recommend Spud Murphy’s in Crookwell. He and Deniele will look after you.’ suggested the publican’s wife.
Subsequently my wife contacted Spud’s and encountered Denielle . “Yes, there’s a room for you but I’ll have to speak to Spud as to which one.’ She stated.
‘Where can we have dinner?’ asked my wife. ’We’ll drive you to Grabben Gullen; I really enjoy a good fish and chips meal.’ she added. ’I’ll book it and ring you back.’
No call.
My wife rang again and got Spud (Barry) this time. ‘Denielle can’t come to the phone right now, she is up to her elbows in flour.’ He volunteered.
This is shaping up to be an adventure I thought after hearing all this. Let’s go!
We managed to book a room and on the morning of our stay we hopped on our motorcycle and travelled to Crookwell.
We arrived, and as per instruction, rode around the rear of the guesthouse and parked.
There was no-one in sight and all doors were locked.
We called out for quite a while and suddenly Denielle appeared. She couldn’t have been nicer and made us very welcome. “Barry is around somewhere, he’ll show you the room.’
So saying she produced a bulb horn and proceeded to honk it. No result! No Spud!
I enquired as to what number room we were to occupy and set off up the steep outside stairs loaded like a pack animal.
Giving the bulb horn to my wife Deniele asked her to go up the same stairs and have search for Barry, all the while honking the horn. It sounded like a very sick duck trapped in a 44 gallon drum.
The corridors of the old pub are an eclectic collection of pretty much everything one can think of. I travelled a few of them looking for our room.
Finally finding Barry we were guided to our suite which was according to Barry, named the Dolphin room,.
It was very clean and tidy, however the giant wooden Dolphins carved into the bedhead were a surprise, but then these are the experiences one is happy to relate over a meal with friends.
We met Mr and Mrs Murphy at 6:30 PM and Barry drove us 13Km to the Grabben Gullen pub where we enjoyed a beautifully cooked seafood meal.
A further surprise: Barry and Denele dined with us at our table for four. We were fascinated with Barry Murphy’s knowledge of Crookwell and it’s surrounds. He is a veritable encyclopaedia, with facts and stories well worth close attention.
This great couple (married 60 years) made for an interesting, informative and humorous evening, as well as chauffeuring us to the pub and back to our digs.
‘I’ll take you for a short walk in the morning if you like.’ said Barry as we parted, and true to his word he did so, accompanied by Patches, his trusty hound.
More stories and facts about the area and it’s history. An hour spent very well.
Marvellous.
If you are looking to spend some time around Crookwell, stay with Barry and Denielle, it is certainly different but you won’t forget it or regret it.

Stayed 3 nights while visiting from WA for a wedding. Was warmly greeted even tho we arrived quite early. The guys here are so friendly and great to hear about the rich history of the inn and area. They are doing a lil bit of work on the place but kept everything neat and out of the way. Place was clean and comfortable such a homely feel. We had an ensuite room and it was awesome all brand new quality stuff and the best water pressure I've ever had! Would love to come back here and have some more time to relax and enjoy everything they have to offer as we where a bit busy with the wedding. I already miss Pinky the galah

We stumbled over this lovely homely place when looking for last minute accommodation due to being delayed for hours on the freeway near Goulburn due to a bush fire. The owners Barry and Denielle gave us a great deal for the 6 of us for the night. What an adventure! We were welcomed in the dark hours of the evening with a nice wood-fire on the balcony and heaters in the big comfy rooms. The kids were enthralled to meet the resident pets, Pinky the Galah and Patches the dog who were very friendly and entertaining! Barry told us some great tales as we had a few drinks by the fire into the night and took the kids down to the creek in the morning before we had to head off. Hospitable and cozy :)

Had a great time with Barry, Denielle, Patches and Pinky the bird. Warm, honest hosts with great stories to tell. Enjoyed the homely inn sitting around the fire place having a wine and beer. Kids enjoyed the country surrounds and the walk down to the creek past the historic Stephenson's Mill. Thanks!

Old school Australian hospitality. Spud is a wonderful host and ensured I had a memorable stay. This antique inn is great as a springboard to the surrounding countryside or just as a break from city life.

An enriching experience to sit by the fire with Denielle and Barry and hear stories from the tree of life.
A peaceful and calming place to lay your head with extraordinary people to talk to including the hosts and other travellers in the journey.
Take a tip and don’t miss this experience, you’ll be better for it. Lola and John
