My first thoughts when entering the restaurant was that it was very clean, with a the new and modern aesthetic. It made our dining experience very pleasant, as quite often simple decor is best.

It’s a pay by weight system, so there’s a bunch of different ingredients to select, then you choose your soup base, pay according to how heavy your bowl is, and then they cook it! You can really customise it to your liking as there was a great selection of ingredients to choose from, and flavours too.

There’s 5 flavours of soup base to choose from, the classic bone soup malatang, tomato soup, mushroom soup and we chose the Tom yum soup and stir fried spicy pot, both which we found quite peppery and spicy… but aromatic and yum!

It costs $4.28/100g

China’s no. 1 small spicy hot pot brand. So many soup bases, so many ingredients, so many sauces, so much flavour!! 🔥

We tried:
🍲 Malatang Hotpot Soup
🍜 Ramen Noodles
🥖 Chinese Doughnut
🧀 Cheese Rice Cake
🍄 Enoki
🥬 Choy Sum
🥟 Shrimp Dumpling
🟧 Fish Tofu
🥩 Sliced Beef
🫓 Soy Bean Sheet
🫔 Tofu Skin

Hotpot is such a comfort food for me and it never disappoints! Zhang Liang had heaps of ingredients and their mouth numbing Malatang was spicy goodness. It costs $3.88 for every 100g and there are non-spicy soups or a stir-fried option for your pot. The soup was super flavourful and all the ingredients were cooked perfectly!

Service was quick and friendly with staff happy to show you how it all works - pointing out the bowls and tongs in the cupboard (better than out in the open!) to the fridge display of so many ingredients to pick from and a choice of 5 broths.

I tried the special house-made broth made using high-quality beef bones and found it very fragrant and not greasy. Wish I could pick the spice level but there is a big complimentary sauce station for you to adjust it to your tastes. I would say it felt like a mild flavour on the lighter broth side with a slight spice numbness tingle. The tomato broth was stronger in flavour and much thicker. Price is cheaper than some other malatang franchises.

My no.1 Ma La Tang in Melbourne🌶 the classical bone broth is so good, with a little hint of spicy and rich flavour. Also the fridge has variety of vegetables and other stuff✨ recommend😍

The coolest new spot in Box Hill!

If you’re like us, winter is tough but one thing that gets us through the cold are big bowls of soup. Zhang Liang malatang hotpot has over 100 ingredients for visitors to pick from. The best part is, you as the consumer gets to decide how much ingredients you’d like in your bowl.

Step 1: open the fridge and collect a bowl to fill up (this fridge is warm - winner)
Step 2: walk along their wall of over 100 ingredients and select what you’d like in your bowl
Step 3: decide whether you’re after a dry noodle or whether you’d like a soup. If you’re after a soup base you can choose either signature, mushroom, tomato or mala-spicy
Step 4: take a seat inside the restaurant and wait while the chefs cook up your meal
Step 5: eat, eat, eat! The bowls are magnificent!

Ingredients include: veggies, greens, tofu, chicken, steak, seafood such as calamari and octopus, variety of different style noodles and so much more!

As it was cold we all opted for soup base dishes. We went with original (spicy option), tomato and mushroom. We were really happy with the taste of the broth and quality of ingredients.

We look forward to coming back over winter! We’ve also told our friends to check it out and some already have and really enjoyed it!

We had a delicious meal at Zhang Liang last night. Overall, everything was fresh, tasty, hygienic and well priced.

We've eaten at hot pot restaurants before and ended up spending way more than expected, so it was refreshing to find that our selected ingredients cost about $25 per bowl. We could have easily shared one bowl between the two of us and been completely satisfied.

We tried both the mushroom and original soup bases. The mushroom soup base was a clear broth that was tasty but not strong in flavour, while the original soup base was full bodied, thick and rich in flavour with a good kick of spice.

There was an enormous - almost overwhelming - range of ingredients to choose from. This allows diners to create the perfect soup for them. All the ingredients were stored hygienically and we saw many items being swapped over during our time in the restaurant.

Another advantage of Zhang Liang was not having to cook the hotpot myself. Everything was cooked the ideal amount by staff and delivered to the table ready to go.

We'll definitely be back - thank you for the tasty meal!

Lovely clean little restaurant with very nice decor. Good selection of items. Great variety of dipping sauces. The classic bone broth was delicious (especially if you like the numbing sensation of Szechuan peppers). Will be back

Delicious malatang hotpot! reasonable price and they have lots of toppings to choose from, for the flavours we tried the tom yum, signature malatang and the stir fry. Everything was tasty, the soup base was not too spicy and not too greasy like at any other places

One of China’s most famous malatang joints with over 5500 stores worldwide 🌎 Zhang Liang has finally landed in Melbourne! 🙌

Malatang is a staple food during the cold winter (and honestly all year round too), and the malatang here certainly hits the spot! 🔥

What I love about Zhang Liang is the huge variety of ingredients you can choose from - they’ve got at least 7 different types of noodles alone, so many kinds of fishballs, and plenty of seafood, meat and veggie varieties.

They’ve got 5 different soup bases to choose from, with one being a dry mala stir-fry. Their signature soup is full of flavour and not too spicy at all, but they’ve got a dipping sauce bar to adjust the spice to your liking. My favourite soup base has to be their tomato soup 🍅 very umami and slightly sweet, I could drink bowls of this alone!

Some of the freshest ingredients I’ve seen in Malatang palaces in melb. I love that they have mushroom and tomato as their non spicy options too and love the idea of having a signature soup which isn’t too spicy to begin with and that you can add more spices/ chilli oil from the sauces bar to create the flavour you want. I will defs be coming back for sure

Great place for Dry or Soup Malatang in Box Hill. The Soup is not too strong like some other places, which I like. The dry one is really tasty. Selections of toppings could be improved but the price here is quite reasonable. Yumm!!

They have a special soup base 'mushroom' which is not spicy nor salty, my favorite. And their price is quite reasonable.

Excellent place to try if you like your malatang. Cheaper and no less tasty alternative to David's next door, and conveniently open for longer at night to allow those late night dinner dates or just to satisfy a craving for a hot, spicy and hearty meal in the cold of winter. Plentiful selection of ingredients and soup bases, though unfortunately no choice of spice level (there are non-spicy options but no choice of less or more spice). A standout in a crowded market.

You can’t beat a warm bowl of hotpot here!

Hotpot is $3.88/100g and there’s such a huge range of ingredients that you can choose from. I choose the 𝚝𝚘𝚖𝚊𝚝𝚘 𝚜𝚊𝚞𝚌𝚎 𝚋𝚊𝚜𝚎, and my partner chose the 𝚉𝚑𝚊𝚗𝚐 𝙻𝚒𝚊𝚗𝚐 𝚌𝚕𝚊𝚜𝚜𝚒𝚌 𝚜𝚘𝚞𝚙 𝚋𝚊𝚜𝚎!

I was really impressed by the display of all the ingredients. Furthermore, you will get your hotpot dish really quickly so it’s great for quick eats!

My husband and I always drive past this restaurant. We finally decided to give it a try this evening and we did not regret it at all! It has a good selection of meat, carbs and veggies. I get to eat everything I like which makes me so happy. It tastes really good! I got the mild spiciness and my husband got the medium spiciness. In my opinion, their mild spiciness is just right for me.

Was excited to try this new malatang joint in Box Hill. The brand is famous in China and they have stores around the world.

The tomato soup broth was the stand out - would definitely recommend giving it a go. Their signature soup is also very delicious. They’ve got a huge variety of soup ingredients to choose from, even handmade noodles - you’ll be spoilt for choice!
