Very easy to get to. You must go through security to enter the site. There are 4 entrances to the site. The Mosque itself is a beautiful and intricately decorated structure. No entry to the inside of the Mosque was permitted at the time. It’s an absolute must place to visit when in Mazar!

Absolutely stunning and a must if you find yourself in Mazar! The tiles on the mosque are the originals and shine as brightly as they must have 700 years ago!

Mosque is located in the centre of the fourth largest city in Afghanistan – Mazar-i-Sharif and is by far the best known landmark in this city.
Building is 53 by 38 m large and very beautiful.
Blue Mosque is roughly rectangular, with the tomb chamber of the purported remnants of Ali in its center. Above the tomb rises the largest dome: 15 m wide, blue cupola.
Whole building is covered with polychrome tiles. Dominating color is blue of different shades.
At the mosque have been added tombs of distinguished religious and political leaders of Afghanistan but whole complex of buildings is enclosed in a precinct.

It is mostly known by tourists as the Blue Mosque City, referring to the Shrine of Hazrat Ali in the center. Mazar-e Sharif is the capital of the Balkh province and a place historically part of several civilizations, which makes it multiethnic and full of interesting contrasts

The blue mosque. The center of Mazar-i-Sharif. The structure itself is stunning. A large beautiful building covered in a mosaic of intricate blue tiles. Around the building, vast couryards enclosed by the outer walls of the mosque. Non-muslims are not allowed inside the building, but you can spend plenty of time sitting in the courtyards, bantering with the friendly locals, observing people in prayer and watching Afghan life unfold.

Striking to see women in blue burqas, covered from head to toe, gliding like apparitions from the thousand and one Arabian nights.

Outside the mosque walls, there are more vast courtyards, this time filled with vendors selling this and that. But what strikes you is the line of the seated poor, lining all sides of the mosque, seeking alms. Many without arms or legs, a grim reminder you're in a war-torn country.

Once you exit these courtyards and the mosque complex through one of the many gates, you are on the teeming streets of the city. Bazaars that spread in all four directions, filled with people going about their daily lives, amidst a never ending war.

The Blue Mosque is a mosque located in the center of Mazar-i-Sharif, Afghanistan.

The Seljuq dynasty sultan Ahmed Sanjar built the first known shrine at this location. It was destroyed or hidden under earthen embankment during the invasion of Genghis Khan in around 1220. In the 15th century, Sultan Husayn Mirza Bayqarah built the current Blue Mosque here. It is by far the most important landmark in Mazar-i-Sharif and it is believed that the name of city (Noble Shrine, Grave of Sharif) originates from this shrine.

A site plan of the location made in the 1910s shows that there had earlier been a smaller walled precinct in the mosque, which was razed to create parklands later, although the portals to this precinct still remain as gateways for the shrine.[1]

Tombs of varying dimensions were added for a number of Afghan political and religious leaders over the years, which has led to the development of its current irregular dimensions. These include the square domed tomb of Amir Dost Muhammad, Wazir Akbar Khan and a similar structure for Amir Sher Ali and his family.[1]

According to a local legend here has been buried Ali who reportedly was brought here by a white camel in order to save his remains from the desecration by his enemies. Most Muslims though consider that Ali is buried in Imam Ali Mosque, Najaf in Iraq.

Alternatively, the personage buried in the shrine may have predated Islam. Identifying the shrine with Ali could likely be a myth to ensure the tomb would be protected and honored by the Islamic establishment.[2]
