Winding Stair Mountain National Recreation Area

Deserted during Covid, probably other times too. Picturesque tree-laden views abound, offering great contrast in May with light green for deciduous oak and dark for cedar. A few turnoffs offer views of the surrounding plains and more distant Ouachita subranges. Nice to cool off a few degrees as well as the road tops at 2300 feet.

If solitude and vast forest is what you crave then this is the place for you. From the turn-off on the west end to the entrance to the state park on the AR side, I did not pass more than a half dozen vehicles going the opposite direction. Hiking several miles of trails, I saw not a single other person. With a perfect end to the day, the sunset vista cannot be any better anywhere else in the state!

Awesome wilderness area that begs to be enjoyed and explored. Fun Fact: this mountain range runs east-west not north-south like most other mountain ranges. ❤❤❤ this place

It was an early morning after a night of slow drizzle and mist, cloudy and still dark when we started on the Winding Stairway. When atop that Road#1, it felt like I was riding my Harley "Joy" into and thru the clouds we were so HIGH. I make it 'my 4-day weekend trip' whenever I can. The place we live in is truly a magical place..

The views are amazing, the campsites are primitive but worth going to. Love this part of Oklahoma.

Breathtaking views, bring something to eat as there isn't anything nearby this scenic highway. Make sure to bring a device to take photos. You will want to enjoy them later.

The fall colors are amazing. We visited 10/31/22.

Section 1 of the OT from where it crosses the highway, to horse thief springs is a treacherous hike with many rocks to twist your ankle on, very beautiful area, just be safe.
