Had a great one night stay here at site 29 which according to the Ranger is one of the more popular spots and I can see why. The hiking trail that leads to the backwoods sites links to the back and leads to one of the most spectacular cliffside views ever. Excellent history behind this location and the gift shop/ check-in is a good place to get information about that. There are also many other things to do besides just camping and hiking like most state parks. This one in particular is well maintained and even has a basketball court. I'll definitely be back when it warms up for some kayaking.

Nice museum and some challenging hiking trails. The main trail is 8 miles and has quite a bit of elevation change, would be tough for kids and beginners.

I've been camping here off and on for years. It's very nice park and well kept grounds but what separates this park from others is the staff. The staff is excellent, knowledgeable and just down right good folks. Everyone you come in contact with is nice and friendly and go out of their way to make sure your stay there is enjoyable. Can't say enough good things about the people who run this state park.

We really enjoyed our camping trip here. The park was quiet and the campsites were beautiful. Watch out for the bandit raccoons at the campsites. They will rob you right in front of your eyes!

The bathrooms are clean, though I did find the setup a little odd. There is only one toilet and shower in the bathroom and they are in a shared room, meaning only one camper can be in there at a time. There were portable toilets outside the bathhouse, which is supposed to be a fix for this problem I’d assume.

There is NO ice on the premises so be prepared to make a trip to the store to replenish your ice if it’s really hot. It was about 100 degrees when we were there and we had to leave the park to buy ice. It’d be nice if there were some available on site to purchase. They have your back for firewood though. The bundles even come with little starters and it’s $5 a bundle. Just wave one of the staff members down while they’re driving by.

The lake/pond is a nice little area of the park. We took our kayaks out for a spin and enjoyed watching the wildlife.

I will say that we attempted to hike the Chickasaw Bluff Trail, but near the end it was overgrown with kudzu so we never got the reward of the view and did all that work for nothing. :-(

Jordan, the seasonal interpreter, was lovely to chat with. We went on one of her guided hikes and you can tell she really loves both learning and teaching. She shared lots of knowledge on our way to the fort.

All in all, we will definitely return. We loved camping here.

Love it here! So peaceful and great trails to hike. We camped there last weekend at the primitive site and it was great. Had our own bonfire area and outhouse.(don't enter outhouse if your not friendly with huge spiders though lol) Trail is very hilly to get to site so be prepared for a good workout hike to get all your gear out there, but worth it. They have other campsites you can drive up to though if you'd prefer that.

Lots of pretty scenery. There was a museum in the visitor center, and it was interesting and fun to walk through. Good trails that are fun to hike, and the overlook is so pretty!

Depressing but well explained history. The history of the event was rather well explained, and certainly went on to clarify the fog of war. Certainly this is a site that is probably best for mature audiences. That being said, the children will enjoy hiking and the plenty of opportunities for shade

Lived an hour from here my whole life and never visited. The welcome shop was very clean and has some great information on the history of the area. I learned a lot in the exhibit I didn’t know about Fort Pillow. The worker was also helpful with the trail I was going on. The picture is from the Chickasaw Bluff looking over the Mississippi River.

Great little museum to tell you the history of the fort! We also stayed in the very well updated campground. Would highly recommend both.

This is a very nice state park. We stayed in the campground at this park, and it is an excellent campground. I cannot speak to the RV sites, as we stayed in the tent only section, but our site was great. The campground is comprised of three loops, the southernmost of which is tent only. Overall this is an excellent campground. The sites, while not huge, are adequate, the provided facilities are good, and the variation in elevation and campsite siting give many of the sites good privacy. Whoever laid out this campground really knew their business. The campground has two bathhouses that, while somewhat spartan, are very nice, with flush toilets and a shower with hot water. Rare luxury while camping in my opinion.

The people who work at the park are very friendly and helpful. The cost of the campground was very reasonable. I won't get into the tragic history of the park in this review, but the museum gives a great overview of the fort and the battles surrounding it. There are many examples (both original and rebuilt) of Civil War era fortification that you can examine, too, if you are into that sort of thing (like I am). The park has many nice trails for exploring. There are also many birds in the area if you into birding, as the area is located in the Mississippi Flyway. There are also a couple of wildlife reserves with excellent birding nearby if you are into birding.

Overall this is a great park with an excellent campground. I recommend it.

Beautiful park, great staff with many guided activities. Lots if good trails and much history to be explored. Campgrounds are very nice. The only downside is the limited number of RV sites. We been here several ti.es and it keeps getting better.

Beautiful and quiet. We rented kayaks and a paddle board. Lake looks small but didn't feel small on my arms. We are planning on going back when it's cooler to walk to the fort.

Visit the Welcome Center first to learn about the history of Fort Pillow and ask to watch the short film. Staff is very well informed and helpful in answering questions about the time period and the soldiers who fought, died, and were buried there.

Tip: If you plan to hike up to the mass grave, use the restroom at the Welcome Center first and take along a water bottle with you. There are no facilities on the hill so be prepared. If you have trash, kindly dispose of it in the garbage receptacle or take it with you. Treat the area with respect- American soldiers died there.

Thanks for reading my review!
