Mud Lake State Forest Campground

Really enjoyed a brief off-season camping excursion. I wanted for nothing.

Nice rustic campground, vault toilet kind of clean. Visited the campground in late April and we were the only
Campers in the park. Only eight campsites, also looked like quite a few trails and the lake was very clean looking. No beach a very good experience and we will return.

It's so pretty and peaceful.

Loved it here. Despite having to listen to the most annoying and loud generator and having to wear ear plugs in order to sleep. That made for one of the worst rustic camping trips.

The campground remains open year-round, allowing for winter camping and snowshoeing, although seasonal roads aren't plowed.

Facilities at the campground include a rustic boat launch at the south end, vault toilets, and water access to Mud Lake. Campsites are available on a first-come, first-serve basis, with a 15-day maximum stay. A Recreation Passport is required for entry, and the camping fee is $20 for one of the eight available sites. Overall, Mud Lake State Forest Campground is a tranquil and nature-oriented destination suitable for campers seeking a rustic experience in the heart of Michigan's natural beauty.

Very nice small primitive campground. Only eight sites, first come, first serve. Very quiet and peaceful. Sites are pretty level and can hold at least a 30 foot travel trailer. There is a boat launch and 3 or 4 sites on the lake. If your looking for peace and quite I highly recommend this place. Last year my wife and I had the whole campground to ourselves for a week.

This is a rustic state forest campground with only 8 non-reservable sites. The sites have decent distance between them and vary from tucked into the trees (away from the lake) or more open (near the lake). Several sites have views of the lake, and a couple have direct access to it down small paths. The sites are large enough for most rigs, even though the DNR recommends smaller trailers.

Big Mud Lake is a decent size and is nice and calm for kayaking, etc. There is a boat ramp near the campground, although Site #6 has a small path down to the lake with a shallow spot to use for putting a kayak or canoe in and out of the water.

There is a 2.5-mile-long connector from this campground to the Green Pine Lake Pathway -- it's a total of about 9 miles of trails that connects you to three different lakes.

Mosquitoes came out a bit at night, but weren't bad overall and didn't bother us during the day in the campground. (Can't speak to what might happen on the trail.)

Cellular service for Verizon is awesome, service for Google Fi was decent.

If you can snag a spot here, you're in for a nice peaceful time but can still stay connected if you need to get some work done in between your forays into the woods or out onto the lake.

Several miles in on good quality dirt roads to get to the campground. Nice campground with 8 sites. Only 2 sites are directly on the lake. Hiking trail accessible directly from the campground.

Beautiful camping spot, but poor fishing!

Peaceful campground. Listening to the birds and frogs. Nice long trail connected and primitive boat lunch with no dock.
