Chimney Rock National Historic Site

What a neat rock to see! You can see it from far away but there is a trail to take you closer.

Better Back roads

If you park at the cemetery and take the trail you can get right to the site. They also have a nice store and museum located here.

This is a great place to take a great new trail the have to walk near the base. Ran into a very informative gal that works for the historical society, she was absolutely awesome.

Great stop to stretch your legs from a long journey! The museum is hands-on and fabulous for everyone of all ages!

The museum has excellent exhibits on the Oregon Trail's most mentioned land marks. There is a small fee to visit but we felt it was very resonable and worth it. The views of Chimney Rock are from quite a distance but the Nebraska State Historical Society has opened new paved trails in August of 2023 that take you through the prairie for a much closer view of the monument. Bring binoculars. Drive past the museum and take a right turn to go to the paved trailhead parking area. There is a private campground near the visitor's center. It has no trees but it offers what I imagine are stunning views of Chimney Rock when it is lit up at night.

Beautiful area. If you have a few minutes to view and hike the trail to Chimney Rock and view the museum, you should. It's a great piece of history

I had the opportunity to visit Chimney Rock in July 2022. I definitely enjoyed seeing the formation after many years of playing the Oregon Trail game as a child. This visit was part nostalgia and part learning about the experience of Native Americans and US westward expansion. The museum is a nice stop at the site since you cannot enter the actual grounds of the formation. The price of admission to the museum is $8/person which is a little steep for what is offered. However, I looked at it as a donation to help to keep the property and surroundings up. I definitely recommend stopping by for a free view of Chimney Rock!

Cool little rock formation with a short bumpy hike to the base. Had a good time walking around the rock formation, something fun to do if you're in the area! Nearby museum has lots of historic information about the Native Americans and subsequent settlers moving through the area.

New parking area with easy access to loop trails. Friendly staff and beautiful sights.

Love this classic monument of the Oregon trail. The visitors center staff were very informative. Definitely recommend this to the history buffs. Be on the lookout for rattlesnakes, we saw dozens on our visit.
