Chimney Rock Cemetery

Took my family over the weekend to learn about American History regarding part of the Oregon Trail. We stumbled across this small, well kept cemetery with many of those entombed are kids from the 1800s. Who may have died from sickness along the trail. There's also recent burial within the last 10 years or so. Didn't take too many photos in respect of those with family resting here.

This was a really neat little cemetery to visit. I was surprised that they are still burying people here. The newest gravestone I saw was in 2009, and most of the graves were post 1900. I can't say I'm surprised, most pioneers would have been buried in poorly marked graves along the trail, but it was neat to walk the area.

The sign at the front really makes you reflect on what the pioneers went through in search of a better life. It is also much closer to chimney rock than the visitor center, so you can get some cool photograph there. Overall, a great experience even if none of the deceased are my kin.

Definitely visit the graveyard if you take the time to go to the visitor center.

I only had about an hour to spend exploring the area so would like to go back. The cemetery was a highlight - so much history in such a tiny plot of land!

Interesting old graveyard. Great views of chimney rock from here. There's also a trail out towards the rock, if you are inclined. It's certainly worth the extra stop if you made it as far as the visitor's center.

We skipped the museum and drove to the end of the road instead. Interesting cemetery with some really old headstones and a great view of Chimney Rock.

Go back to history. On this very small cemetery (up to 40 graves) you have an uncomparable atmosphere you won't find anywhere else!

We skipped the museum and drove past to hike the trail to Chimney Rock. The hike was narrow with few challenging spots. The cemetery was interesting.

Visited on a crisp winters afternoon…the place certainly has an ambiance given its historical location… all the more so given the Scottish grave and the fact that I ended up here on a visit from the Scottish Hebrides. An investment in a decent managed footpath, signage would be prudent.

Overgrown with bad access and neglected gravesites

Grass was really dry. Super dusty, musty, and crusty. Did not look like the video game. RIP.
