Great out of the way frontier fort used through the 1900’s as a POW camp and TB ward. There are many haunted stories of the site which are interesting to research. Love walking the grounds during the day, the staff keep it well maintained and it good bird watching to

Really cool place to visit if you have the whole day put aside. It's a little bit of a drive but worth it, the historical sites are in very good shape and there is a lot of room for exploration. You can go inside of many of the old buildings, though they vary from abandoned to having period appropriate furnishing; which also varies because the Fort was has been in use since 1855). Since it is such an open exhibit, please be kind to the old buildings, the staff works very hard to keep everything in good shape.

I am really glad we checked this place out on our road trip. The area has a bunch of dirt roads through the remote wilderness for you to explore. Just make sure you have a map or know where you're going. After driving around for awhile we found a nice primitive campsite with a picnic table and an outhouse nearby. We set up camp and enjoyed the amazing sunset from a nearby hill. It was winter time when we went so we never saw another person the time we we stayed there. I would definitely camp here again if i'm ever in the area.

Magnificent views and not another soul in site. Almost 100 miles of trails to discover. Hiking different times of the day creates different textures and feelings of the Capitan mountains.

New Mexico's newest Veterans Cemetery is worth the visit. Close to historic Ft Stanton museum and surrounded by the beautiful Capitan and Sierra Blanca mountains, it is a fitting place of rest for our Veterans.

I stumbled upon this place on accident. Wonderful scenery, I wish I could've explored more but I didn't have water. Birthplace of the original Smokey Bear!
