Montano store

One of the more important structures during the Lincoln County War. While Montano himself claimed neutrality, it was here that members of Tunstall's Regulators were trapped in a firefight against the Murphy-Dolan faction who had set up in the hills behind the building. Francisco Herrera was stationed on the roof and after a prolonged ceasefire, he shot and mortally wounded Charlie Crawford as he emerged from a hiding spot on the hill. Inside at the time were well-known Regulators Charlie Bowdre (one of Billy the Kid's best friends) and Doc Scurlock. Both of these men were married to daughters of Herrera. The building itself is old and there is not much to see, so imagination is key to your experience. This is one of the buildings you can enter after paying the $5.00 entrance fee at the museum.
