Calvary Chapel of Red Oak

Full disclosure: I've never attended a church service at Calvary Chapel.

Our son attended Vacation Bible School here. Unfortunately, he was only able to attend one night because he became sick soon after. In a given summer, our son generally attends around a dozen Vacation Bible Schools. The churches are diverse in size, capacity, denomination, themes, etc. Some have hundreds of children with dozens of paid staff and volunteers, some have less than two dozen children, with a handful of dedicated people who make it all come together for a great week.

What touched me about this church was that even after just attending one night, we still received a personalized handwritten note, letting us know how thankful they were he could join and that they missed him and would love to see him anytime. We've attended children's programs at churches that were much larger and well-resourced. Our child was one of many and if he missed a class/session, we never heard a word.

It may seem like a small thing -- and I suppose, ultimately, it is -- but when I think about the Gospels, although we often remember Jesus for the big things, (the miracles, the healings) Jesus is a God of the small things. He noticed the people around him: their stories, their pain, their potential. The personalized attention my son received during our brief time with Calvary Chapel really touched me -- and it was a wonderful re-presentation of God's love.

This was my moms and stepdad church. Mr. Tim is a very nice guy. He came 3 hours to speak at my mom's service. It's a good size church with a small town feeling. No one is a stranger. Please visit this church if you stay close.
