Awesome little family business. The Pollo asado plate was excellent. Great rice and beans too, and homemade tortillas! Also the pupusas were excellent.

Great little place! Food was excellent and the staff was very friendly. I had the Pupusas and a side of plantains. Will be my new go to, can't wait to try other menu items.

We used to eat Papusas all the time back when we lived in a more Urban area where we had access to it. We were thrilled to hear that there was an El Salvadorian restaurant here in the valley. We got the pork and cheese. They were the best. They were decent sized and not too greasy.

It was worth it to drive out to Tieton for it. Definitely recommended.

Amazing family, best Salvadorian restaurant in Washington State. I know the family personally and they are amazing people, such great food and community. ❤

Best pupusas I've had in years! We tried the cheese, cheese & asparagus and the mixed. All were delicious and came with pickled veggies as we were hoping. Will definitely go back the next time we are in Tieton!

We happened upon this small town square of Tieton and decided to eat lunch here. The exterior looks like it was recently renovated, which had a nice simple aesthetic appeal. The interior looks like it could use some work, but you really come for the food which is really delicious. My friend ordered the cheese/spinach pupusa and a side of rice/refried beans and plantains. I just got the enchiladas, which had a little kick to it but were still so good. Service was great--friendly and attentive. Highly recommend you check it out if you're in the area!

Went here for the Salvadoran food and loved it! Very tasty, fun staff, clean and a quick walk around the town revealed these cool, local art installations celebrating the fruit harvested in the area. Great, energetic people who make excellent food.

Great food, exemplary service, and reasonable prices. Two great choices for south of the border food in Tieton. It’s always hard to choose, although we lean towards Don Mateo. They have their own outdoor seating and there is a new city playground across the street.

Great spot. The tortillas are fresh, the carne asada is fantastic, amazing flavor and the rice is spot on.

This is mine and my wife's favorite restaurant! The food is always so tasty and the prices are also very reasonable. My wife's favorite is the adobada (spicy pork) enchilada's. I don't think I can pick a favorite but I love the tortas, enchiladas, pupusas and taquitos. The family who runs the restaurant are also great people. It's worth the trip!

A very delicious place to eat with unique menu items found no where else around the Yakima area. Family owned and very friendly. And did I already say it was delicious? It was fantastic! The pupusas are amazing!

I am from a Salvadoran background and moving two states away from my whole family sometimes causes home sickness. Especially when food brought us together. I haven't found any restaurants around the Yakima area that makes Salvadoran food and when I found out Don Mateo makes Pupusas and other Salvadoran food I had to go try it. The owners were very nice and welcoming the second I walked in and the food was delicious!! It made me feel at home. I will definitely be going back very soon.

I wish we'd stopped enjoying our food long enough to get a photo! We took a 4-mile detour to check out Don Mateo's and it was worth every yard. Service was friendly and quick. The space is clean and efficient, but comfortable. The food? Yes, so good!! We had chicken mole', three different pupusas, rice and beans and horchata. The rice and beans was a very generous side, enough for a meal for our 9 y/o. The mole' was deep and complex and felt like we'd been invited into someone's kitchen for a meal. The pupusas were very flavorful, spicy, comforting, and the horchata was the best I've had - not very sweet, lovely cinnamon, very refreshing, perfect thing to temper the lovely heat of the food. We will definitely be back and we encourage you to make it one of your detours, too. Thank you to the family for this great experience! (While you are there, check out Nomad Mercantile next door, and take a stroll around the nearby city park to see some cool period buildings and check out what else Tieton has!)

Still my favorite haunt to enjoy the foods I grew up with. Here it is 04/22 and the food is just as delicious, and even better than when I started coming to eat here! Now that I am back in town I know that I will be coming in more regularly for my favorites. Tieton is a great place to be on weekends .

I come here every time I'm in Yakima! The food is always amazing and the owners are welcoming and attentive. If you've never had a papusa before this is the place to try it, you won't be dissapointed!

The enchiladas and papusas here are delightful! Authentic flavors and just all around hit the spot. I loved how crisp both dishes were on the outside while so soft inside. Nothing worse than soggy, oily, enchiladas and papusas, and there is none of that here! And don't forgot to try the plantains for dessert! Definitely worth a detour to visit, even if Tieton is a bit out of your way. You won't regret it!
