The town of Damar Kansas was established in 1888 in western Rooks County by a group of French Canadians. The St.Joseph Catholic Church was built in 1912 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2005. This beautiful church was built in Romanesque style. It has a copper roof that is "penny-thickness" which was installed in 1947.

This is a beautiful church in an architectural style distinct from the Volga German Churches in the surrounding area. This town was founded by French Canadians, and the Church architecture reflects this. My wife's great and great-great grandparents are buried in the cemetery, which is located outside of town on a hill with a beautiful view of the Church. This Church is not located right along I-70 like many of the other beautiful Catholic Churches in the area, but it is well worth the drive north of Hays to see it.

Visited as a tourist. Beautiful church. Not sure it is always open but we were fortunate enough to find it open while someone was practicing the organ. Town was cute and well maintained. Pride in their French Canadian roots was evident with most stores and restaurants sporting French names.
