A pretty cool little place for a side attraction has a nice old log cabin. Restored by a bunch of people there is some description inside of the cabin about how it was restored. It's worth a day trip and a small trail / hiking trail that you can walk about.
Home on the range cabin has picnic tables for your dining needs. Home on arrange facilities have a porta potty for your restroom needs. This location has a large gravel parking area.

Cute off of the path little cabin. Hiking trails are at the site. There is also a port o potty. Great place to learn a little history as well as stretch your legs.

Peaceful cabin not far off-the-beaten path (of Highway 36)! The cabin is easy access, and several historical markers dot the area. Be sure to check out the walking path and read the markers along the miniature nature trail. Cabin is in great condition and well worth a visit for anyone familiar with Higley’s Kansas State Anthem! Outhouse on site.

I’d never heard of this place nor had I ever given any consideration to the state song of Kansas nor its origins. I happened to be passing thru, saw a sign and decided to stop. I’m glad I did. What a neat little piece of Americana. Well maintained, easily accessible and certainly worth a few minutes of your time. Don’t forget to leave a modest donation if you can afford it!

Surprise find traveling across Northern Kansas. Gives a great history lesson of the origins of the Home on the Range song. Beautiful and very peaceful location. Well maintained. Much appreciation to those that have put the time and effort into keeping the site a wonderful place to visit

This place was so cool! I wish we had time to walk the trails and read more about the area. You can go into the cabin and read more info too. Heads up, there is no bathroom but they provide a portable potty that is well kept and okay to use. Definitely check this place out.

Just off the road this place is a great stop. Enjoyed the history and free exhibits. Went for a short walk on the nature trail and enjoyed the varieties of grass. Would stop by again! They say there is a anniversary in 2022 that is worth attending.

Really cool and well done. We loved the cabin and the door mechanism, and the details like a horseshoe and violin. It seems really cared for. The meadow walk was just lovely with informational signs. It feels like a place you can really breathe in fresh air. Highly Recommend!!

I was driving home on Hwy 10 from a weekend in Nebraska with some friends. I just happened to be at the right place and the right time when I turned down the road to see the cabin. I had seen the movie about the song and the cabin at the Dodge City Public Library and here it was. The owners offered to take me with them to go around the acreage. I jumped at the chance. It was very enlightening the plans they have for the area. The cabin was amazing. I told them I need to bring my grandsons up. They were very knowledgeable about the song, the cabin and the area. I was very impressed and want to thank them again for the ride. I’ll be back to see how their plans progress. Good luck to them. Carol Scheve

When my grandpa was a little boy his family's farm was right next to this cabin. He told me it was in great disrepair at this time. He also told he he used it for his playhouse. Later he went to High School in nearby Smith Center and was a medic in WWII. His father, a farmer, had been raised on the Kickapoo reservation near Horton,KS. As a young man he had trained horses for the US Cavalry at Ft Scott, KS before marrying grandpa's mother and moving West to Smith Center.

A heartwarming example of American spirit at it's best and tender history.

Americana at its best, although, I hope this wasn't your primary destination. The true birthplace of the song/lyrics "Home on the Range". Written in solitude on the Kansas prairies northwest of Smith Center, KS. Self-guided, with a stop if you are driving by.

Wonderful example of American History. It's worth the journey, if you are in the neighborhood and want to understand early settler life on the American prairie.

History being saved in the middle of no where. Very beautiful area. Even had lunch with the owners dog (who was extremely friendly and has manners).
