It’s definitely worth planning to stop here if you are in the Turtle mountains area or peace gardens! "Mystical Horizons" (open to see images with proper cropping!)
High atop a "mountain" (the "Turtle Mountains" of ND are really just hills) in North Dakota near Carbury lies this unique astronomical-themed site of giant sundial and stonehenge-like features. They were conceived by ND native, Jack Olson, an air force WW2 B-24 pilot and later aerospace engineer/inventor whose career spanned nearly 30 years at Boeing and involved projects including the Apollo lunar module landing pads. Unfortunately, he died in 2001 before the construction commenced, which was carried out by a collaboration between various local, community and state groups. Attched are some of my images shot at the site during a visit of August 17, 10 years ago (all available on my gallery website).

Cool place to go check out the stars on a clear night! Just a short drive from Bottineau.
Just a few miles from the Canadian border.
Really a neat place just to hang out or have a picnic with friends and family.
Bring the kids! They will love it!

While visiting North Dakota my friends took me to Mystical Horizons. Perfect location, incredible vistas from Turtle Mountains. The sun dial, Stonehenge display for the solstices and spotting scope for Polaris were great. Jack Olson, the man who created and designed the displays sounds like he was a very multifaceted, interesting man.

One of the most random roadside destinations I have come across. Located on a beautiful stretch of rarely visited highway in extreme northern Minnesota in the beautiful Turtle Mountain area not far from the International Peace Garden. There are great vistas from the location and it is a modern day Stonehenge with a sundial clock, solar calendar, and Polaris sighting tube. Very interesting destination.

Beautiful spot with interesting sun dial, calendar and great views of the Plains. Must be amazing to view the stars on clear nights. Also: bathroom.

A unique exhibit of sculptures and elements such as a sun dial, solar calendar, etc in this modern day "Stonehenge".
