Die Kirche ist seit dem Jahr 1350 Vikariat. Das Patrozinium von Matzen ist St. Leonhard. Zur Pfarre wurde Matzen im Jahr 1784 Erhoben. Der Ursprung der Kirche war Gotisch. Bei der Erhebung zur Pfarre wurde die Kirche Barockisiert. In den Jahren 1958 - 1959 wurde die Kirche Erweitert auf die derzeitige Form, Größe und Ausstattung. Bis in die 1920 er Jahre befand sich Ein Friedhof um die Kirche. Überreste des Alten Friedhofes sind die Gedenktafel des Graf Kinsky an der Rückseite der Kirche und die Gruft des Graf Kinsky.
