The fountain does not even appear during the Christmas market. Hlavne namestie square takes on a completely different look in December, because it is decorated with numerous stands with Christmas offers. In the evening, movement around this square is quite slow due to the abundance of visitors. The walls around the fountain serve as a place to rest or have a quiet snack.

To be totally honest I had no big expectations when visiting Bratislava as the city is out of the radar as a main tourist destination. And so a few spots like this charming square come as a nice surprise. Human proportion, crowd free and very liveable. You can tell that the urban requalification had been made with great care.

A magical place and square in the center of Bratislava. It's great to visit during the holidays, day or night. An excellent play of light and shadow takes place in the evening due to the fantastic lighting. Across the street is a Starbucks, lafići, restaurants with local and authentic cuisine and specialties of Slovak cuisine, as well as several pastry shops with incredibly delicious ice creams of various flavors. Carmouth Patisserie is a must visit. Be sure to take a walk in this pedestrian zone and enjoy the variety of offers, pictures and pleasures that this part of the city has to offer. On the other side is the church and the city museum. There is an entrance fee, but it's worth a visit.

Lovely human scale square brimming with history if you look up close. I advice food or a drink at nearby Brixton House

The maximillian fountain is located at the center of the old town. Created by maximillian II after the big fire that devastated the city. This is one way to prevent fires by creating several fountains.

Story says that during the recent years, there was a time that the statue was taken out for a period of time just to be cleaned, and during that time, there was a fire that hit the building behind it. You can see the burned remnants at the buildings at the back vs the newly refurbished adjacent building.

A nice fountain located on the old town, the Maximilian fountain was built in 1572 in the Austrian stone workshop of Andreas Lutringer, with a financial contribution from Hungary’s King Maximilian II. However, it is better known as Roland’s Fountain.

Oldest standing fountain in the city, it was ordered by Maximilian II, Holy Roman Emperor after a fire in 1563. Major reconstruction in the mid-18th century, outer pool added in 2006. The fountain features in local legends. It is a Slovak National Cultural Monument.

The Roland Fountain (sometimes referred to as Maximilian Fountain; Slovak: Rolandova fontána or Maximiliánova fontána) is the most famous fountain in Bratislava, Slovakia, as well as one of the city's important landmarks. It is located in the Old Town, in the Main Square.

Its construction was ordered by Maximilian II, the king of Royal Hungary, in 1572 to provide a public water supply. The fountain is topped by a statue of Maximilian portrayed as a knight in full armor sculpted by master A. Lutringer.

Its current appearance is probably far from its original look, since it has been modified and rebuilt several times. However its popularity remains unaltered, still being one of the downtown's favorite meeting points. Many legends are centered on this fountain, mostly featuring Maximilian as the town's protector.
