Današnji izgled ugaone, dvospratne zgrade (koji se pripisuje arhitekti Aleksandru Bugarskom) nastao je u poslednjoj četvrtini XIX veka, prepravkom zgrade koja se na tom mestu pominje još u XVIII veku. Naziv "Platoneum" nosi po vladici bačkom Platonu Atanackoviću koji je 1861. godine zgradu kupio od potomaka Serviskih, a potоm poklonio Fondu Srpske gimnazije.
