Cerro Tres Kandú 842m, World Country High Point - Paraguay

Summary
So this was a proper little mini three day adventure to Paraguay to hike Cerro Tres Kandu. At 842 meters it’s the country high point for this very lovely country. It involved flying from BA to Asuncion, then a three am start the following day for a four hour drive south to a pretty remote, rough trailhead. Then it was a five hour up, explore and back proper jungle trail hike with nasty snakes and other creepy crawlies. It was a good trail overall but there were quite a few pretty steep and badly constructed ladder, cabled and rope sections. A fantastic wildlife outing though with snakes, large geckos, spiders, vibrant colourful dragonflies and very exotic looking butterflies. A very hot (25-35c), sticky, steep 8km, 500m height gain day overall done in an all in time of 5 hours. Up time is actually about two hours but I had a good explore up there to visit two viewpoints and had lunch. It is a great little hill to do and so much fun!

Note 1 - Route: My Garmin gps did not track very well on this route due to the jungle canopy so this is an edited version of the original gpx to take out all the route misnomers. I have also added the route to OSM and updated routes of the two miradors to the OSM routing of the area. As stated there is about 700m or so of cables, ropes, wooden handrails and a variety of wooden ladders and steps. All of this is not well constructed at all but it is fun.

Note 2 - Hotel. I stayed at the super good Hotel 5 & Residences in Asuncion. I paid $130 for a two night stay in what is a 5* Rochester chain hotel. Ingrid is the manager there and speaks great English. They are also keen to provide a driver facility to Kandu and will be doing so in the future.

Note 3. Travel Agency. The last 10+ kms of the drive is on a rough road which is at the top end of the capability scale of a two wheel drive vehicle so to keep things simple I searched for a travel agency just to get a driver & 4x4 vehicle to get me from Asuncion to the trailhead. I found DeJaVu travel agency which is owned by Armando and Cristina. Lovely lovely people. They don't speak English. Armando drove me down and back in a two wheel drive Toyota. I did ask for a 4x4 but in anyway I didn't get one and on the drive in Armando lost the front sill of the Toyota. It is a rough road and if there has been rain the week you do this trip you will not get there in a two wheel drive. The cost for the day in Dec 23 was $120. This included the $4 dollars entry fee to the camping site at the trailhead where you have to register.

This is it, the highest peak of Paraguay. It took me exactly 60 minutes to finish the 2.9 kilometers up to the top. Don't underestimate the climb as it's almost 600 meters difference in elevation. Avoid weekends as it will get very busy and probably jammed up at the steepest sections where people can use ropes and steel cables for safe climbing. Be careful when wet as it gets muddy and slippery.

The peak is not so high but the way is very intense. Almost always very steep. I went there very early in the morning and also it was during the weekdays so I didn't see anyone. The view from the top is super impressive. It was absolutely worth visiting.

Muy bonito. La entrada son 40000 por persona + 10000 por los guantes (recomendable). Se tardan unas dos horas en subir y 1h 30 min en bajar aprox. La subida es dura y complicada en ciertos puntos pero vale la pena solo por las vistas de la cima. Imprescindible llevar la equipacion adeacuada para la excursion (calzado, agua, comida, antimosquitos...).

Un lugar único lleno de Magia. Cuenta con 4 miradores con diferentes perspectivas del paisaje, recomiendo! Deben ir preparado para hacer ejercicio ya que la caminata des de un poco más de 3 km de escaladas.

Me encantó la experiencia de subir el cerro tres kandu fue toda una aventura y nos divertimos muchísimo ☺👌

Experiencia inolvidable, aunque no estés bien físicamente, es posible llegar a la cima yendo de a acuerdo al ritmo de uno. Hermosos paisajes

Fue una linda experiencia única e inolvidable , llegamos de madrugada 4:05 en el portón de la entrada y no tardamos nada en empezar a subir a las 4:15 subimos tan rápido q ni cuentas nos dimos con mi compañero que ya estábamos en la estación 8 de ahí vimos la estación 11 y después ya nos encontramos con la estación 13 era de noche todavía, cansados miramos la hora y era las 5:25 no podíamos creer que ya estábamos en la cima de la montaña con apenas una hora y diez nos llevó llegar noce si tuvimos miedo o nos ayudó mucho el prepararnos físicamente antes porque temíamos de no llegar ala punta y era un sueño de llegar antes del amanecer y mediante Dios se nos cumplió vimos el amanecer por más q había mucha niebla era algo hermoso e único.

Excelente lugar, el camino es bastante accesible, tanto en cualquier moto, como en vehículos, hay zonas que pueden ser un poco más difíciles para autos muy bajos, pero en general se pasa bien. 40.000 es la entrada (fui para acampar, por lo que no sé si es menor el precio solo para un día). La vista es hermosa, y el lugar bastante amplio. El tiempo de subida es de 2,5/3h aproximadamente.

El camino de ingreso para llegar hasta el predio está en muy malas condiciones.
No recomiendo ir en días de lluvia.
La experiencia adentro del predio es excelente!
Todo señalizado, buena atención y en buenas condiciones, con excepción de los baños que estaba muy sucio.
En un principio pensé que no lo iba a lograr, pero está todo tan bien adaptado y adecuado que es muy fácil subir hasta la cima.

No sabria como describir, es maravilloso, la pasamos muy bien fuimos toda la familia y acampamos en la cima.(el viento en la noche es super fuerte.) Fue todo un reto subir ya que llevamos muchas cosas y un niño. Pero valio la pena. Escuchamos muchas historias del lugar con los guarda parques acompañado de un rico terere. A la tarde pudimos ver el maravillo atardecer que regala y a la noche junto a la fogata compartimos un rico cocido con chipa, bajo un cielo estrellado. Al dia siguente observando el amanecer. Fue increible nuestra aventura.
