We were surprised when we found this place tucked on a charming cobblestone street in the center of historic Coimbra, this restaurant is a true hidden gem for anyone craving an authentic taste of Portugal. From the moment you step through the door, you're welcomed like family into a warm and inviting atmosphere. My wife and I don't repeat places, but this one three times in a week. Every time we were surprised by the owners with tastings of the rich variety of wines and Portuguese kitchen.

New place in downtown Coumbra — down the stairs off a plaza, down some steps to the right. My wife and I are from New York and appreciate good food. We met the husband and wife owners Gonzalvo & Cristina who were very friendly and welcoming. We had a lovely meal of beef medallions on a laurel stick and sautéed squid & shrimp — both delicious. Friends who later joined us had an omelet and pasta dish which they said was lovely. We shared a fruity and fresh bottle of vinho verde! We ended the meal sharing shots of ginga (cherry liquor) with Gonzalo.

Do not hesitate … excellent food and ambience. Gonçalo is an excellent chef and his staff is warm and friendly. Don’t miss it.

We were looking for somewhere for a drink before we went to the nearby restaurant where we had a table reserved. We didn’t immediately realise that the Taberna is a restaurant rather than a bar, but the proprietor welcomed us and was very hospitable. The interior is very cosy, with interesting decor and features. The menu looks good and we hope to return and sample it soon.

Our best meal in Portugal. A bit off the beaten path, in the quiet square. But everything we tried was absolutely delicious.

Wonderful off the main grid place in town center. Kind, attentive folks with original Portuguese dishes all from first principle right off the grill/stovetop. Excellent blend of cornbread, cabbage and beans, like migas, with fantastic bacalhau. I’ll be coming back when I’m in Coimbra. Thanks!

Great food. Charming and intimate place. Great location - just around the corner from a busy street and yet quiet. The service was perfect. Loved how the food was served in inverted roof tiles.

New fav place to eat in Coimbra. The tiny fish with a hot sauce and the boar are a 10/10 👏🏻

Excellent restaurant. Very friendly staff. Excellent food. We found this restaurant by accident.

Very friendly personnel. When we arrived the kitchen had closed for mid day break. They offered to serve us what they could at that time. The 2 dishes we ordered were excellent. The cod fish was served with a smoked meat burger that I thought was fish. Great taste and combination. Served with the vegetables it was a full course meal. The pork and pawns sounded peculiar but once we tried it we could not stop eating. It had a rich gravy made from the meat broth and wine which combined delicately with the fine tasting grilled prawns. We ordered a big green salad, french fries that were cut round discs extra bread for the Devine gravy 4 bottles of beer and a glass of Verde wine (sparkling fresh wine) and paid 54€. They also treated us to a local liqueur. Great tinny little place loaded with taste, good service and big smiles.

Wonderful Tiny little restaurant. They created a table for us eventhough they were full. The waitress was funny and really friendly. We ordered 3 “tapas” (salad, fried fish and vegetable pastry) and it was absolutely delicious. Plenty of food for just 2 and really well priced ( food, 2 glasses of wine and coffee for €30). Absolute must try!

What a find this was, tucked away just off the main pedestrian street in downtown Coimbra. The staff were very pleasant and spoke good English. Four of us entered for a meal but first we just wanted to sit with a drink. No problem. The menu was small, reasonably priced and varied and catered well for our two vegetarian friends. Our meals were freshly prepared and very enjoyable. Don't miss this little gem of a restaurant.

Really tasty vegetarian dishes at good prices! But order both, if you are starving ;) Good location on a beautiful small street.

Appena fuori dal passeggio. Gonzalo è perfetto sia nella accoglienza che in cucina. Il baccalà è buonissimo e il polipo gli sta appena dietro. In una stradina defilata a ridosso dei negozi molto carina.
