Empress Market, located in the heart of Karachi, is a captivating blend of history, culture, and commerce. This ancient marvel, with its stunning Roman architectural influence, has been a pivotal part of Karachi's heritage since its establishment by English rulers in the 17th century.

Walking through the grand entrance of Empress Market is like stepping back in time. The ornate archways and intricate detailing on the building's facade are a testament to the architectural genius of the past. Inside, the market is a bustling hub of activity, offering a diverse range of products and experiences.

The market is a sensory delight. The vibrant colors of textiles, the aroma of spices wafting through the air, and the calls of vendors selling fresh produce create a lively atmosphere that immerses you in the local culture. You can find everything here, from traditional Pakistani clothing to exotic spices, handicrafts, and more.

One of the market's highlights is the friendly and welcoming shopkeepers who are eager to share their knowledge and assist visitors. Bargaining is a common practice, adding to the excitement of shopping here.

If you want to have a visit to a place where you not only enjoy the heritage and oldest building but also to go for some groceries, Empress Market is for you then.

Let me add this too, that I myself used to order some least famous vegetables of our culture like, broccoli, Iceberg, beets etc. From online stores and it almost cost me double the price that I could easily had here in Empress Market.

Apart from veggies, if you're a meat/beef lover, Dry fruits addict or fresh fruits lover you are still welcomed here.

Excellent place for local grocery items; especially dry fruits, oils, spices, herbs, etc. Fresh vegetables and fruits are also available. Imported candies, chocolate & biscuits can also be bought from here. Overall environment of the market is fully desi and the visitors have to park their vehicles on road sides.

Empress market is one of the British Raj era buildings which has significant historical background. It was called Empress of India before Pakistan came into existence. At this point this building was the center point of the city and native soldiers who fought in the war of independence were ruthlessly executioner here. After century this place has become the center of whole sale market where you can buy anything from basic kitchen accessories to imported goods. They have animal market where you can buy animals and birds for your home as pets.

The Empress Market was constructed between 1884 and 1889 and was named to commemorate Queen Victoria, Empress of India.[2] The market was constructed at a well-chosen site that was clearly visible from a great distance. The site of the market had historical significance as it was situated on the grounds where a number of native sepoys were executed after the failed 1857 uprising against British rule. Accounts mention that the sepoys had their heads blown off by cannonballs in an attempt to suppress any mutinous feelings among the locals.[3] The British fearing that the local population will build a monument to honor the executed sepoys instead built the Empress Market to commemorate Queen Victoria.[4]

The foundation stone of the Empress Market was laid by the-then Governor of Bombay, James Fergusson in 1884, who also laid the foundation of the Merewether Memorial Tower. It was designed by James Strachan (architect), the foundations were completed by the English firm of A.J. Attfield, and the building was constructed by the local firm of 'Mahoomed Niwan and Dulloo Khejoo'. The building was arranged around a courtyard, 130 ft by 100 ft, with four galleries each 46 ft wide. The galleries provided accommodation for 280 shops and stall keepers; at the time of its construction it was one of only seven markets in Karachi.[5]

Empress Market is a grand structure in the Indo-Gothic style having vaulted roofs, cusped arches, a 140-foot-high clock tower studded with leopard heads.[6]

In 2017, according to the reports in the news media, Karachi citizens' hopes for seeing a badly needed renovation and repair job on this British Raj building were fading away. The previous Governor of Sindh also had ordered the building's renovation when he was in office, but they never materialized.[2]

Originally, Empress Market had 280 shops and stalls inside the building. In the year 1954, the KMC increased the number to 405 shops and stalls and also built an additional 1,390 shops and cabins on outside the building.[7]

Empress Market, a landmark of British colonialism. Once this place was famous for daily needs so is at the moment but not same as it was back by 20 or 30 years. Earlier shops were very clean and so was the whole market, similarly not such extraordinary variety of food, vegetable, spices etc. One thing that needs to admire for local Govt. they had done a great job by removing all encroachments. Excellent job. Now you can easily go there, park your vehicle and enjoy.
