St. Michael the Archangel Parish

ST. MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL PARISH
(CAMILING, TARLAC, CITY)

Originally built in the 1700s, the church of St. Michael the Archangel in Camiling is one of the more notable historical landmarks of this northwestern town of Tarlac. Also known as the Camiling Church, it was declared a parish in 1870.

As mandated by the Spanish colonial government, the massive brick and stone church, along with the municipal building, was built at the heart of the town plaza. After it sustained considerable damage in a 19th-century earthquake, the structure was rebuilt in the 1880s and then renovated several times afterwards. But this original church burned down in 1997 and has lain in ruins since then. Though there were several attempts made to rebuild this first church, none proved successful.

The new church was built in 2000. The church facade deceptively appears older than it is, perhaps due in large part to its stone exterior. A series of arched entryways and stained-glass windows run along both sides of the church. And inside, wooden beams emphasize the height of its peaked ceiling. Its golden retablo retablo beneath the cupola stands out against the pristine white walls of this impressive church.

I have been planning to visit a priest friend of mine for sometime now. So, I packed up and courage and drive 3 hours to Tarlac and visit him. Shocked to see the place was amazing. It has the remains of the old cultural church. Choir is amazing. I am happy to see my friend whom I have not seen for more than years. I’m happy that I took this trip. Oh and FYI, I missed the entrance of the church the first time cause it really has a very small gate. So, if you are planning to go there, you need to watch out for it.

The present church structure is a beautiful building that is quite reminiscent of times long gone and next to it is the old structure which was razes by fire ove two-decades ago. I enjoyed walking around the vicinity, also, even though the old structure is no longer being used as a house of worship: I find that it is quite useful for meditation. Access to the church is very easy, not much issue in that, and food is easily obtainable since the church is right next to the public market.
